Kid's Pictures

I am having my boy's pictures taken next week. I have a 4 yr old and at that time a 3 week old. I am at a loss on what they should wear. Mainly for the 4 yr old. I figured the 3 week old would most likely be naked or in a solid onesie in a color to match his brother. Any ideas?

I am a seasoned photographer, having worked years in a studio, here's my thoughts...

The baby would look best in a solid, crisp white onesie, and/or in only a diaper. There are also some amazing shots you can get if you're willing to have baby's little butt crack in the picture :) As for the older one, a nice polo shirt with horizontal stripes paired with kakhi shorts. Even, a solid polo is nice, if you prefer. I have always like the way little boys photograph in polos. Plain white, black or gray backgrounds will look the best as well.

Another idea (since you have 2 boys, you can do this no matter what their ages are) is to have the baby in only a diaper, and have big brother sans shirt. This makes an awesom "bust pose" if you can get big brother to hold baby super close. Let the photographer get creative and have fun and you'll be happy :)

What about big/little brother shirts?? We did the naked baby pic and it was beyond adorable. Have fun...the years fly by so fast and you will always treasure those pictures.

either way solid colors are best. it sounds like these are going to pretty casual, so i would do jeans and a polo shirt for the oldest and a coordinating onesie for the baby. i wouldn't do them both in the same color because if they are next to eachother in the photo it will look like one big (insert color here) blob. blues and greens look the best on camera. red, black or white can photograph really harsh if the lighting isn't right. also, consider where you are getting the photos done, outside or in a studio. if they are outside, think about what your surroundings are going to be. if you are in a studio, check the photographer's website to look at backgrounds to get an idea of what colors look best with your favorite backgrounds.

hope this helps, i've shot children's photography (mainly family and friends) so i've had alot of experience with what works and what doesn't). you can see my work on facebook... just search "J. schattilly photography"

good luck! :)

I love matching outfits or at least have them in the same color...I agree solids are best. It looks nice with red on a white background...or when they do photo in black and white except for their shirts. I would do the "naked baby" photo of just the baby alone...and then do both of them with matching outfits/colors together. How fun! Congratulations on your new addition :)

Solid colors are always best. Avoid patterns.. If they look good in blue or red..
Those colors photograph really well.

I think it looks better to "coordinate" rather than "match." I had my 4 yr old boy in a blue button down shirt and jeans and my 3 yr old girl in a crisp white dress with blue flowers. They don't match but they don't clash. Their clothes take a back seat to thier little faces. That's what I wanted - for the kids to be beautiful individuals. Another tip - most parents don't give as much thought to the shoes, and subsequently they really stand out. A lot of kids pictures are taken sitting down - so you end up looking at the soles of thier shoes. Try not to do anything that is trendy right now, you don't want to date a picture with the clothing. A solid polo and cargo shorts is very neautral.
