Hi! My 2 1/2 year old son has had keratosis pilaris since he was 5 months old. I was wondering if anyone here also has a child with this AND if you have had any success with lotions, creams, vitamin A deficiency theory, milk allergy theory, etc. I would appreciate any personal experience advice.

Keratosis pilaris is a very common skin disorder. It is a hereditary condition and usually starts to show up several months to years after birth. The condition gradually worsens through adolescence and young adulthood but gets better by middle age. The skin does not shed normally and builds up around hair follicles. Exfoliation and Retin-A help. Since all the available treatments are fairly irritating and the condition is harmless, you may wish to just use a moisturizer with alpha-hydroxy acid in it.

I have been recently diagnosed with this, not knowing it was actually a condition. My dermatologist said to use Amlactin, which was the first thing that has ever worked to get rid of just about all of the bumps and dryness on my arms . . . it even made my elbows soft! However, I asked if my two year old could use it, and she said no, but to try Lubriderm. That never worked for me though. I'd ask about Amlactin--what age you can start it. It is over the counter, but pricy. It definitely works.

I don't have any experience with infant keratosis pilaris. However, I developed keratosis pilaris as an adult. I went to a dermatologist. And I was told: when you finish bathing you should pat dry instead of rubbing with a towel and then apply moisturizer. I was given samples of one called Amlactin and told when they ran out I can buy it at a pharmacy but I don't need a prescription (I haven't tried to go buy it yet). I was also given a prescription for Umecta. I have been using one in the morning after a shower and one in the evening before bed. I have noticed about a 75% improvement.
Good Luck

A., Can you please explain to me a little more about this. Am I right to assume that it has something to do with his skin? I am associated with NuSkin/Pharmanex, a global company that specializes in skin and health. I will be more than happy to contact the company and ask questions to see if there is anything we can offer. We have 125 scientists from around the world doing research on skin problems and health matters. I hope there is something we can do for him.

Sincerely,

M.

Hi A.,
I wish I had advice for you, but I don't. My 3 year old daughter has keratosis pilaris as well and it is quite severe. If you get any good advice or responses, I would appreciate it if you could share them with me.

Thanks!
Jen
