Keeping Food Out of Wisdom Tooth Hole-tmi Gross

Just had my wisdom teeth out today, and I feel fine. I'm even eating normal foods. But I'm having a hard time keeping food out of the gap. I've had to fish out stuff (GROSS!!), I am of course being careful not to hurt any blood clots.
I was given a syringe to attempt to flush it out, but it hasn't done a thing! Should I put gauze back there when I eat? BAH! Last thing I need is food to be stuck down there!

What can I do next?

Tea tree oil is an antispeptic very similar to what the dentist would use to clean bacteria out of a cavity before he filled it.

If you do end up packing it with a small amount of cotton, i would soak the cotton in tea tree oil- to keep all the bacteria out fo the socket. In fact do a search online to see if there is anything written on doing that.

my daughter had hers out in March and had the same problem, along with a bit of an ache. The dr put an anesthetic strip into the hole - both problems solved.

I had the same problem years ago when I had mine out. Unfortunatly I got dry sockets and they hurt like heck. I had to go back and have them packed and that solved the food in the hole problem. I would not try and pack them yourself, see if your dr can do it. Or you could try a water pik sent on gentle and see if that helps.

I would stick to soft foods. It's not so much an issue of pain and what you are able to handle, it's an issue of keeping the hole in your jaw clean. I remember watching my dad try to fish bits of oatmeal out of his tooth-hole with a toothpick... not pleasant... lol.

Im so glad yours was easy! I had mine out 7 years ago and I still have those holes....and food still gets stuck sometimes, sorry.
Until they are healed I would still put gauze up there though.

Gentle rinsing! Its hard and the hole takes a while (few months) to really close. Be careful with that syringe, that how I ended up with the dry socket & let me tell you, you DONT WANT THAT!!! I found spinning a qtip at the surface of the hole helped. Its hard to keep food out, but worse would be to damage that blood clot. No suction (like a straw to drink or smoking) and be very gentle.

Is what you're seeing sort of a greenish, greyish mass stuck in the hole?
If it is thats actually a normal part of the hole closing and you shouldn't dig it out.
If what you are actually seeing IS bits of foods, keep using the syringe and try putting the gauze in when you eat. I know the thought of eating with gauze in your mouth is weird, but it does help.
Good Luck! Glad it went well for you! =)

My daughter was not given the syringe until a week later. The first week you are just supposed to gently swish because if you dislodge the plug then you can end up with "dry socket" which is an open hole and possibly pain in the jaw forever after. After a week we went to the surgeon who cleaned the hole (lots of stuff in there) and then she used the syringe for about a week after every meal. Stick with soft foods the first week, then gently use the syringe with the top almost into the hole. But I would all your surgeon for instructions. You should also have a check up with the surgeon about a week after as well as 2 months after. Good luck.

Try to chew more with your front teeth if you can. Use your tongue to keep food up front and not chew with the molars so much. Yes it's weird but helps. I'm so glad you haven't had a tough time. Let's hope you recover easily like I told you I did. Remember, no smoking, no straws and be gentle when brushing. Do the ice packs for another day too. It will stop the swelling and bruising so many other get.
