My 16 year old had her wisdom teeth removed early Saturday morning and is still having a rough time of it. Rougher actually in the last 12 hours or so. Its a very odd thing to "drug" your child (prescription they gave of Percocet), let me tell you! But she is in pain, crying, weepy.
So my question is, What can anyone tell me about a Dry Socket? What to look for, personal experience? I just want to be prepared for the worst. I am hoping once she wakes that she has turned the corner, but if not, I want to know about this situation!

Thanks everyone for their stories! She seemed to turn the corner late Monday and by Tuesday morning was much much improved. Does not seem to be a dry socket, just needed more healing time. Shes very frustrated with not being able to eat much as that still pretty much hurts, but can open her mouth more and the swelling is better controlled so its all just getting better and slowly healing. We left the house for a few hours yesterday (we had a scheduled info session at the Art College here in Mpls..I had a sub coming into my home daycare and all that..so I really wanted to make it there). We were gone about 5 hours and she had fun but was pretty tuckered out by the time we were done!
Time to heal I guess is what we need now!
I caught dry sockets when I had mine out. I was 21yrs old and the one thing I remember is I could fill a throbbing in my gums where they took the teeth out. I was horrible. Good Luck, I can tell you once the dentist packed them for drysockets, I felt so much better,
Did they give her post-op instructions? The surgeon/dentist should provide you this information.

In my case, I developed a dry socket about a week after extraction, when I was trying to "clean" the area. The pain was getting better up until that point, but it became worse. I also had a foul odor/taste in my mouth. I called the surgeon's office and they told me to come the next day. I had to go to the office every day for three days, and they put a medicated gauze to the socket, which helped a lot with the pain.
They are very used to these types of situations and will be happy to help. So do not hesitate to call, when the pain gets worse. It takes time to heal but it should gradually get better. If the pain gets worse or does not improve, you should call the surgeon's office.
Throbbing pain..I had mine out at age 30..have her go get them packed.. Keep going back. It hurt worse than my c section.. After 2months of the dry socket thing. They finally took x rays I had a bad infection and needed antibotics.. So my advice if she hurts that bad.. Can't get comfortable. Insist on x rays.. It could be more than dry sockets. I wish I had the x rays sooner. Hope shevfeels better soon!

I heard putting a wet tea bag in the socket helps...also clove oil is supposed to help with tooth pain.
I am sorry your child is going thru this...I have heard it is THE worst pain EVER!

Very painful and suck :( I had one when I got all 4 wisdom teeth out at age 20. They pack it with medicated gauze a couple of times- you keep going back. Hope she feels better soon!
I had it when I had mine removed at 17. It was horrible. Both my husband and I had it done at the same time (we met in high school). He was back to eating reg food within a few days. Me, well.. it took a good month before I was good to go. I had to go into the Dr.'s office every 2-3 days and they jammed these cotton things with medicine down in the holes where the teeth were removed. It was horrible.

My teeth (where they were removed and surrounding teeth) hurt really bad for about two weeks. If you have any concerns for her take her to the dentist or call them. I ended up calling the dentist and talking to them and they assured me it was normal. The dentist said it was just my other teeth moving and adjusting. Call the dentist, you don't want to mess around with dry socket.
It is HORRIBEL, and VERY painful!! The clot in the hole where the tooth is gets basically sucked out or no clot forms. If you can look into the hole and see any type of blood then you do NOT have dry socket. (pray that is NOT what it is, because it is very painful) I had it 2 times, both probably my own fault because I drank through a straw the 1st time, and I smoked the second time. Both of those things cause a sucking action that can dislodge the clot and cause the dry socket. UGH! I had to have the dentist clean the socket out with water first, and then he blew air into it.... OUCH! Then he pushed a medicated piece of gauze into the hole and stitched it up. Luckily it took and I never had to go back. I will say that I have had some pain in that part of my jaw ever since though whenever it is really cold, etc. Having wisdom teeth can be really painful, so hopefully your daughter is just feeling like garbage because of the "normal" pain associated with the extractions. It actually does get worse before it gets better, so I am not at all surprised that the last 12 hours were worse. If there is no improvement in the next 12 hours, I would make a call. Hope all gets much better and very soon!! :)
I had a little bit of a dry socket (not bad enough to have to do anything about it, but it sure hurt a lot and kept me from sleeping). I took Advil, and it pretty much did nothing. The dentist suggesting putting orajel on in (and she actually said that usually regular pain medication doesn't work very well on that type of pain), and that REALLY helped - I got whatever the strongest version of orajel was and used a q-tip to get it into the "hole". Really helped a lot! Of course the best thing to do is probably to take her back to the dentist so they can look at it.

My best friend had them out and she was in pain. She is a strong woman and was pretty much crawling out of her skin and actually taking her pain meds! Yeah she had a dry socket. I couldn't figure out why she was being such a baby till she finally got into the doctor and they helped her. She was right as rain as soon as she got some proper care and pain management.

I would suggest over the counter tylenol or something rather than the narcotic if you are not comfortable drugging your daughter. I had a dry socket once- and yes it hurt, we filled the "hole" with salt and let it sit awhile- then rinsed it out with hot water. Whether that was the right thing to do or not is beyond me, but it helped me keep infection out.
I had 2 dry sockets and it was painful! The poster that said it was worse than natural childbirth - I agree!! It hurt to even breathe, if air touched that socket it was horrible. I got them repacked and it did help with meds.
It's the worst pain you can endure - I had two dry sockets after I got mine removed and honestly the pain was worse (and longer) than natural childbirth!!! I was told not to smoke, drink out of a straw, etc nothing that would create a suction....but some people get it no matter what.
The pain for me was like a dull, then fierce stabbing pain in my empty tooth hole (LOL). I was on meds and doubled up on them with tylenol, advil, whatever I could take. It took me a week to get over it and I lost 10 lbs and cried every day and mostly laid in bed.
Best thing is meds and being understanding!!
It hurts like He!! I had one the next day. If that is what the problem is I would suggest taking her in for a check up now. The pain will only get worse.
Hey! That was me a month ago!! Ugh it sucked. Four days later I still couldn't go 6 hours with out getting my drug fix. I was starting to feel very achy were all of my lymphnodes were (I got a lovely infection while on antibiotics!!. So I made an appointment and they then said I had dry socket. They put in this nasty guaze that was medicated. For me I only needed one treatment (thank goodness!!) but I know others that have had 3 or 4.
