My 6 yr old is very passive, sensitive and soft hearted. Last week there was an incident at his daycare were he was bullied to the point he kicked and screamed and didn't want to go back. The issue has been taken care of but he is still nervous to go. I worry this will be something he will continue to have to deal with in the future.

My husband and I want to enroll him in Jiu Jitsu to help build his self esteem )not to retaliate) but he will know it should he ever need it. We live in Newark, TX and there are 3 facilities we are considering. Do any of you have any experience with these facilities.
1) The Core Fight Academy in Haslet
2) Champion ATA Black Belt Academy close to Eagle Mountain Lake
3) Pat Burleson Martial Arts in Saginaw (we know this is the most well known but the website does not seem to cater to children as much as adults)

Thoughts?

So What Happened?

Just wanted to add that we chose Jiu Jitsu over karate because karate is a a hitting and kicking type of martial art where jiu jitsu is more of a wrestling/grappling martial art. It's more about self defense than harming the other person.

I think Jiu Jitsu would be awesome for him, I do understand Dad on Purposes concern regarding the etntry way into mised martial arts, but being that your son is so young I think it is a great way to teach self defense as well as discipline and to help him come out of his shell. It is also a GREAT from of excercise. My husband was doing it for a while. He was attacked years back and said he wished he had known the jiu jitsu before, because he would have been better equiped to protect himself. Good Luck!

Jiu Jitsu is not necessarily an entry way into mixed martial arts. That's a very general statement to make & incorrect, IMO.

I wish you lived here, I know of a great place that teaches children's BJJ in our area and we're actually signing DD back up this week! She loved it when she did last year.

Most of the fighters in the UFC are wrestlers first so wrestling would be the entryway not ju jitsu...but to the question sorry I don't know anyone in tx but my 6 year old just started ju jitsu for similar reasons and he LOVES it. I would ask if you can have a trial class to make sure your son will like it because those classes can be costly.
Added to mamatrol I'm well aware of the differences my husband used to fight in rage in the cage which is AZs local cage fighting and is a black belt in ju jitsu. If you look up the dominate style of most of the UFC fighters like randy couture, rashad Evans, bj penn, george st Pierre just to name a few they are all wrestlers as a dominate style.

May I suggest Kid wrestling instead? Wrestlers are never bullied or messed with, and you don't have to deal with a six year old learning how to throw punches.

Plus they have wrestling in schools, colleges and the olympics.

Jiu Jitsu is generally learned by today's young'uns as an entryway into Mixed Martial Arts (ultimate fighting - as seen on tv).

I dont have firsthand knowledge about the locations but I have experience with both good and bad martial arts education. I just looked at the websites and The Core Fight Academy looks the best. Champion ATA is too flashy and seems to focus on nonfunctional martial arts (karate, Taekwondo ect.). I can't find a website for the third.

Also I would sugest Judo for a 6yr old instead of Jiu Jitsu... Judo is mostly throws and dealing with a standing opponent, while Jiu Jitsu is broken arms and wrestling on the ground. Also Judo is designed to practice said throws on actual opponents in a safe/controlled setting and nothing is better for a kids self estiem than throwing another kid... again in a 100% safe and controlled environment.

Good choice over Karate though because it is not considered a functional martial art... meaning someone trained in Jiu Jitsu can easily defeat a Karate practitioner of equal skill/experience (same goes for wrestling).

Ps.
Lol @ Mandy B.- Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling are very different martial arts. Jiu Jitsu fighters were dominant in the UFC for a while however not terribly so for almost 5 years now

Lol @Dad On purpose- Jiu Jitsu does not include striking, UFC striking is dominated by Muay Thai
