Hi Kelly,
My daughter had been jumping from one activity to the next until she started Karate about 7 months ago, even though she is a girlie girl, she loves it and put everythign to keep going. Not every place is the same, I have heard many children saying "I am an orange belt I got it in 3 months!" but they don't even have a certificate so if they have to start at a different school, they will have to start all over again, find a school that is AKKA certified, the one we go is great! It is located right beside the main library in 87th street behind Mc Donals. What matters the most for me, is that the instructors are motivated and help the child to like the art and do their best, Mr. Mc Daniels is awesome! We even had a week of Karate camp at their place and the kids were thrilled! The cost varies depenmding on what you want, some schools are cheaper but beware of what they have to offer, after doing some research, I found that a good price is not a good service or learning experience.
We pay $130 a month and we go twice a week, but you can go everyday if you want and earn the belts faster, of course they have to pass the test, but there is no need to practice at home, they give them all the tools and instruction and they are ready to pass the test when the day comes. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw my (8 years old at the time) doing 30 push ups and 30 sit ups for the test plus all the exercises and convinations that she learned. Here is the phone number if you want to give them a call: ###-###-####
Check them out at www.akkaop.org
If you decide to try, we have coupons for friends for a free month, I can send you one if you want.
Call and tell him that you know Miss. Abadie (that is how they call my daughter) and me:)
He is a lot of fun and that is why kids are so happy and want to go all the way to black belt!
Hope it helps and you can find the right place for you!
Oh! They start at 5 I believ, but I think it is a little too young....it deppends on the child. Ask him, he is really nice! And his wife helps with the camp too. They also have to teachers (women) that are awesome too! Good luck!
