hi everyone...
i was in the hospital for a small bowel obstruction and thank god, it was resolved without surgery!! A nutritionist came by and gave me all this info. on increasing my fiber intake so my bowels have some help movin things along. Then my Doctor stopped by and assured me that it had nothing to do with my diet, small bowel obstructions happen mostly to people who have had surgery on their intestines. i had a tumor removed from my small bowel in 2006 so this is his reasoning. my question is, besides increasing fiber, is there any other supplement or food that i should eat or avoid?? thanx in advance!

What can I do next?

Hi M., Glad you are home and well. I would suggest you have some probiotics. They really help keep intestines in order. The ones in Activia are good but I use a capsule made by Natren, a California based company. You can look them up online. www.natren.com or call 877-962-8736. I get mine at the health food store. Good wishes, Grandma Mary

Exercise and lots of water and diet will all help keep things moving. The adhesions that you developed on your small bowel from your surgery put you at high risk for bowel obstruction, thats why preventive measures such as diet and exercise and increased fluid intake is so important. In other words, your diet probably did not cause the obstuction but can help prevent another one.

As someone who has BTDT more times that I would like to admit (mine
never resolved so surgery was always necessary) be careful with the
fiber. If you have any narrowing from adhesions too much fiber would
not be a good thing, as things could get hung up. There is a balance
you must keep. Some vegies are a big no ie broccoli. Anything bulkie
like that.

You can try flax seed oil. I'm not sure about the measurements, but I've heard a lot of people recommend it. They say that things move very easily while taking it.

Hi M.

Drinking lots of water is VERY important to keep things moving! And I strongly recommend a supplement with a digestive enzyme ( I can recommend a good one if you need one). As we age, we produce less digestive enzymes so it is a good idea to supplement. After all, we don't always eat the right things. Things that can potentially constipate you are processed food, eating lots of meat, fried foods, cheese....
Check out Dr.Oz's website www.realage.com Lots of great info and you can sign up for free e-newsletter.
Cardio excercise is also VERY helpful to in keeping everything moving, not to mention all of the other numerous healthy benefits it brings! ;-)
Take good care M., K.
