Just curious...does Anyone Can Fruits and Veggies?

I recently answered a question on the site regarding the monthly food bill. Well, it got me wondering...does anyone can anymore? My mom, who immigrated to this country, canned all the time. I remember going to local farms during the summer and fall and spending hours picking fruits and veggies then we'd come home and spend hours preparing the food and canning it.

What can I do next?

I was raised on it my entire life and I still can with my father and will continue forever. To me the food taste so much better this way and definitely saves money. We also hunt and butcher and process our own meat as well which definitely save money since that seems to be the most expensive item in the grocery store. So you are not alone people still do this and I will pass it on to my children just like my parents did to me.

Good luck

I just started canning, and so far, I love it! I think we will save a lot of money, and I know what is in my food! There are some canning groups on Yahoo that have been extremely helpful. The startup costs are a little high, but it's a one-time expense. To can veggies and meats, you need to use a pressure canner (I got mine for $60 on ebay.) To can most fruits and jellies, all you need is a boiling water bath canner (you can get it at Wal-Mart, Target, Ace, etc.). Good luck, and if you need more info, let me know!

My husband does this for the family. For Christmas we got him a larger pressure cooker. When things go on sale, we stock up and he cans it. We also can things from our vegetable garden. The kids who are 2 and 5 help and they love it too!

Yes. Many people can things. My friend has a garden and grows and cans all year. We help her and we get the benefit of sharing in the food.
My brother in law also puts in a garden every year and he does the canning as well. AWESOME!!! It's so nice to have things on the shelf to grab from the pantry as you need it and when you do it yourself, you know what went into it.
I don't have room for a garden, but I am happy to help with those who do.
There is something so empowering about it.

No, but I have been meaning too, we keep talking about it at church! We did can some chicken, I'm sure it tasted fine, but looked disgusting, so we never ate it.

My SIL cans - pickles (okra, green beans, green tomatoes) and jam. I freeze things - you can parboil and skin tomatoes and then freeze them (on a cookie tray and then put in zip locks), tomato sauce freezes well, lots of fruit freezes well if you are going to cook it or use it in sauces when you thaw it. We freeze herbs too. I think there is a new edition of 'Putting Food By', the canning bible out in the last few years if you want to start.

I make all my own jams/jellies - about 5-6 kinds per year. We go U-pick strawberries and apples every year. Grapes and raspberries grow in my yard. We just planted blueberries, but still have to buy more and we buy peaches. I also can quart jars of peaches and apples to use later for pies. And applesauce. We garden and I can 5 or 6 cases of Salsa/hot sauce every year. Sometimes I do pickled hot peppers too if we grew enough. And we make our own pickles and pickled asparagus too.
jams/jellies, fruit, salsa, tomatoes and pickles are best canned. I don't like canned veggies, plus you have to use a pressure cooker when you do veggies. For fruits, tomatoes and pickles, you can use just a water canned pot because they are acidic enough. We just freeze veggies from our garden - green beans, peas, shredded zucc etc.
My kids have only had "store" jam probably two times. Homemade taste better and you can control the sugar. I use No Sugar Needed pectin for my jams and then I add just a little sugar - about 1/10 what a normal recipe would have. Then it's just like spreading fruit on your toast! instead of a spoonful of fruit flavored sugar.....
We give away baskets of jams, salsa and pickles to close friends for Christmas.
I think it's a great way to save some money, get in touch with your food and eat healthier too!!!!!
