Jogging While Kids sleep...is This Safe?

I'm in desperate need of a work-out. I was getting up and walking/jogging early in the morning while the kids (toddler & infant) slept and my husband hadn't left for work yet but it's gotten to be so dark out at that early hour that I get spooked now. So now I'm trying to get my husband on board to do the couch to 5k with me in the mornings, just up and down our street. It would be dark but we'd be together and we live in a safe neighborhood, but he says he doesn't feel comfortable leaving the kids asleep like that. I say we'd never leave our street, which isn't so long that we'd be out of sight of our house. We could even leave the baby monitor on the sidwalk so we could listen for them as we came by. He's still against it. Usually we're both completely paranoid about the safety of our children but I honestly don't see how this could be dangerous. Am I missing something here? What do y'all think?
***I should also add that both of my kids sleep until I get them up at 8 (we'd be going at 6) and we'd only be gone 20-30 minutes. But judging from the responses, maybe my husband is right. I definitely don't want to take any unnecessary risks when it comes to my children's well-being.
p.s. here in Texas it's too hot out any other time of the day and if I run in the evening it would be midnight before I would be able to sleep, so my options are limited. We've outgrown our house or I'd still have my treadmill. And when I say I'm desperate, I mean it. =)

Thanks for your input ladies!

So What Happened?

I guess I was thinking this wasn't much different than a parent standing in the driveway while their child slept, so I don't see how this could be illegal, like I'm leaving my children alone. But it seems to be unanimous and I'm so glad I asked. I will no longer consider this option. Perhaps I will go by myself and just stay on our street as someone suggested. We do live in a safe neighborhood but I think I've watched too many Datelines. lol. Thanks ladies for setting me straight!

UPDATE** OMG, I guess I also need to mention that I'm not leaving my toddler up roaming the house with a pot of boiling water on the stove (seriously, little piggie toes!?!?). They'd be in their beds, SLEEPING with baby gates in their doors. Even if someone woke up they wouldn't be roaming the house and even if I were home and in the next room the baby could choke on spit-up. Seriously, moms who take pleasure in raking someone over the coals just for ASKING A QUESTION make me CRAZY. Thank you, JessinTexas for making a very valid point about something happening to us. I did not think of that.

I guess because it is very fresh on my mind, I'd say no, you don't know what could happen.
One because they are so small. But just yesterday in my neighborhood, there was an attempted break in at 10 am. And we live in a nice neighborhood! There was a 10 year old girl at home alone and her 17 year old brother, literally was gone 10 minutes. He came home and interrupted them IN THE HOUSE with the little girl hiding downstairs!
Good Luck

I couldn't do it. Especially when my son was young, my imagination would go into overdrive over all the things that could go wrong. And the thing that to this day is the worst I can imagine is that I somehow wouldn't/couldn't be there for my child if he needed me. What if he woke up or was sick and he couldn't find me? What if the house was struck by lightning and it caught fire? What if someone broke in and kidnapped my child? Admittedly I was hyper paranoid when my son was under 5 yrs old, and I've gotten better now that he's a strapping, strong 11 yr old. It might be just me, but I just couldn't do it.

I can understand your predicament. I live here in Texas too. But if you are too scared to run by yourself, why would you want to leave your kids alone? I am not one to be super paranoid, but I would be worried about scaring my children. I would either do the run solo on your street, find another running partner (another mommy perhaps) or wake the kids up and take them with you. I have had to take a break from my couch to 5k routine because of the heat too. (The other day I went out at nine and although it was hot, it wasn't 100 yet and I ran with my 4yo and 22 mo in tow.) Besides, like the other poster mentioned, in another month the weather will be more tolerable. The other option may be to find a gym that offers babysitting services. Many of the rec centers here have very reasonable prices and many also have indoor running/walking tracks. It may be something that is worth the investment. GL!

seriously? very bad idea for many reasons, all below. one, you could lose your kids for leaving them alone at that age. is it seriously worth the risk to your children? a monitor on the sidewalk while you run by will not tell you if something happens when you aren't running by. please for your babies, find a better alternative. your husband is absolutely right.

Please don't... if they wake up they could get into just anout anything before you could get in the house.

I sometimes think my daughter will sleep for awhile - exhausted and just went down for her nap- and so I will start a messy acitivty (making meatballs for example) only to have her wake up 1/2 hour later just for a hug then back off to sleep. If I can't get to her she gets out of bed and comes to find me.

If they are both napping in cribs, I would worry about the toddler climbing out. When we tried CIO my daughter climbed out of the crib at just under 18 months old. Once they are up they can be very very determined.

Perhaps there is a neighbor with a teen who might want to wake up early and baby sit while you are out running?

Good luck

(P.S> I hate to says this, but it is reality - if you do choose to go running with your husband, watch out for nosy neighbors, they might think you are endangering your children by leaving them unattended and call the ploice.)

Put the kids in one of these double jogging strollers ( http://tinyurl.com/2e8rdvr ) and run with them. If the only time cool enough to run is that early, slowly start adjusting their schedule's so that they are going to bed earlier and waking up earlier. Where there's a will, there's a way!

No, do not leave your infant and toddler unattended. You've been given the reasons why it's a bad idea so I won't go into that again.

There are many options for exercise in the home. I have 2 little ones so I can't get out to run when it's cool either for the same reasons. I've been doing work-outs that I find free on my cable's on demand channel, been looking up boot camp type workouts on-line to do, I have The Firm step bench and work out and it is killer.

There is a lot you can do right in your living room while they are sleeping to get in shape and you won't have to worry about them.

I think by asking the question it tells me that you have some reservations. Go with your gut feeling and don't leave them unsupervised. If you have to talk yourself into it, it's not worth it. Too much can happen in just a short amount of time and you'd never forgive yourself.

Yes you are missing something lot's of things
1)Toddler walking out of the hosue
2)Toddler getting into something poison
3)hot water burn and scalding himself
4)picking up and dropping the infant
5)infant choking on his spit up or toddler choking
6)climbing onto furniture getting hurt or having a TV or dresser falling on him/infant
7)the stray intruder (happens in safe neighbors hoods)
8)fire
9)electrical outlets toddler sticking something in one
10)bathtub drowning
There isn't a limit on what a child or infant can or can't do they are learning everyday on their abilities they are in constant motion you may look at my list and say to yourself this will never happen to me but I bet you when you speak to other mom's that one of these tragic things happend to them and their child they have said the same thing.I only left them for a little while I turned my back and now this happened. As a mom I wouldn't leave them to go jogging get up as early as you can before hubby leaves to work and make it routine as he is getting into the car your jogging up to your house.

R.,
I wouldn't do that, you don't know what could happen. A fire can start at any given time and you might not even be able to get in the house to get your children out. Maybe someone can break in the house from where you can't see them and then what would you do? So many things can go wrong! You just don't know! so why take the risk. Why don't you just do what you want to do with your husband by yourself, knowing that you are just right there, and take your cell phone with you.
Blessings

I know it's tempting, but disaster can strike in just seconds, so no, it's not worth the risk. Until the weather cools, walk the mall with the stroller later in the day or work out to a dvd. It's great that you are getting in shape, but you'll need to find other options and not put your precious little ones at risk, even for a short time. Best of luck.

Is there a local YMCA? Most offer free child care while you work out.

Check to see if there some other mom in the neighborhood who would get up that early to run with you while your husband is still home.

If you say you've outgrown your home and your treadmill is a priority (or only solution) get a folding model and purge enough so you have space for it.
Good luck!

I agree with the comments already left. Here is one more angle. IF there was some type of incident at your home and the authorities were called, would you be in legal trouble for leaving your children unsupervised?

Kudos to you for wanting to stay fit. Would an aerobics video work for you?

wow no way. if you have to, go by yourself but leave your husband in the house. if the neighborhood is safe, you'll be safe jogging by yourself too :) it's not just fear of intruders, but gas alarm going off, fire, choking, falling down, and a million other reasons why i am siding with your husband.

My only concern would be if one of them wakes up and you are not there. Especially for the toddler, it could scare them to death to wake up to an empty house.

I totally understand where you are coming from. It is hot here in Texas and you are right, you can only run early in the AM to be able to take the heat. Do you have a dog to run with? If you are only on your street, and your neighborhood is safe, as you stated, then I guess I don't understand why you can't continue to run by yourself though. If it makes you feel any better, this heat won't be here forever, maybe just another month or so, and you can get back into your regular routine.

I know what you mean...can you stay in front and do some sort of aerobics for a little bit, then implement your daily life into a work out routine? If you drive, park far away from the store and walk -do you have a stroller> to walk with? Walk in the mall or large indoor stores (we have huge stores here I don't know what you have there like Cosco, Safeway, Sam's club, etc.For your arms (and this one embarrasses my husband but I do not want Grandma wings-I lift milk gallons 12 reps at a time while I am in the grocers line. Do you have steps in the house? Go up and down. The point is although you might lose your mind not running, there are a lot of other ways to utilize your body for a work out.

Can you buy one of those joggers strollers? You can jog and push the kids are you are jogging. What if your toddler happened to wake up and wondered the house looking for Mommy and Daddy? He/She would be so scared when you were nowhere to be found. There are a ton more things that could happen. I agree with your husband.

I was thinking the same thing as you "I'm going to be in the front of the house with the monitor on" but the biggest deal for ME with this one is not the safety of your kids, but the safety of YOU and your hubby. What if someone came by and hit you with their car - your kids would be in a house all alone. I've also thought "maybe I could make a quick drive half a mile to the store for a quick soda" but if I was in an accident or if I were hurt in some way and could not get home, that would be BAAAAD.

I know what youre saying about it being SUPER hot here in Texas. My AC broke in my car, so we're stuck at home INDOORS until October or November comes around (or until my hubby gets it fixed!).

Oh so what about workout videos indoors?

I’m a little bit of a fire-a-phobe, so I would worry about a fire and not hearing the alarm until I ran by the house and then it might be too late, god forbid. Whereas when you are inside the house, you’ll hear the alarm the millisecond it rings and be able to rush right to them.

I think JessInTexas makes a good point too--- if something were to happen to you two, no one would know that there were 2 little kidos in the house.

Do you have a double jogging stroller? Could you wake the kids up a little earlier and take them with you? Or maybe you wouldn’t even have to wake them up, you could just pop them in the stroller asleep?

I agree with the other posters. No, I wouldn't be able to do it.

I know your situation to well though, since my husband works out of town M-F and that gives me no chance at all to get out to exercise. I understand you are in TX and I am in OH, so not sure if this even be a helpful suggestion, but I get my kids in their "gator" or "bug" (those fisher price driving toys) and I have them "drive" in front of me and I speed walk behind them.

Good Luck

My vote is no. Given the age of your kids and the amount of time involved. Its not like you are just running to the end of the driveway and back. The toddler could get up while you are out and get into mischief, or become upset because he/she couldn't find you. What about getting a jogging stroller and taking the kids with you, pajamas and all? I see several parents around here doing that.

I'm sorry to say this, and I've sure lots of moms have already said it, but it's not okay to leave the kids at home alone, even for a few minutes. If something happened, G-d forbid, you would never forgive yourselves.

Maybe think about having a responsible middle school kid come and stay in the morning before the school bus comes, or if you have an elderly neighbor (many of whom are early risers) who can come and stay in the house with them so you two can do it together. Or, post a notice at the neighborhood bulletin board that you're looking for a jogging partner. But don't leave them at home alone.
