JFF--P.Diddy's Son

P.Diddy's son just accepted a $54,000 scholarship to play football at UCLA. P.Diddy is worth $475 million. P.Diddy's son drives a $400,000 car (Maybach). Thoughts? Should he return the scholarship since he can clearly afford the tuition or should he keep it because he earned it?

What can I do next?

This young man EARNED his scholarship. It wasn't given to him. Does he come from money? Yep! Lucky him!!!! He had a father who was talented and made the most of that talent.

If P. Diddy wants to make a contribution to UCLA then I'm all for that but I will not say he should or should not. His son earned this on his own. How wonderful to know that a celebrity kid has some brains and talent and used that to get a scholarship to college. I see some of these "kids of celebs" and I think what "useless people" they are. Congratulations to Little Diddy.

So, if his rich daddy pays for his education, home, and expenses, he's a spoiled brat... And if he's offered a free ride scholarship that he earned on his own merits, with his own talent & hard work, with no help from his rich daddy, he should give it up to a poor kid, just because?

I think he should take it & run. Maybe he's sick of living in his father's shadow. Maybe he doesn't care about the fame & money. Maybe he just wants to be his own person & earn his own way. I think it's much more noble than letting daddy pay for everything & riding on his coattails.

At least he's interested in doing something useful & bettering himself by actually getting a college degree, which means that he wants to be self sufficient & pave his own way. When is that last time you saw a Kardashian doing that?

He earned it. No he shouldn't have to give it back. My parents offered to pay for my college but I turned them down because I wanted to earl it on my own, maybe this is his way of earning his way. Nothing wrong with that.

He is not his daddy. He earned the scholarship on his own athletic merit. Why begrudge someone of what they earned?

Children of the wealthy "can't win for losing". My first thought was that it would be honorable, but then I read the response that suggested that maybe he wanted to earn it on his own. That makes sense. I hope that's what it is. :)

He should donate it to a student that needs it.

Yes, he has earned it by playing well enough, however I think there are students who deserve it that need it. I think the HONORABLE thing to do here is to either pay the same amt for another student at the university who NEEDS it OR to give it back.

ETA: From what I know about this family and Sean Combs (P.Diddy) is that he is all about his family and his business/brand. He knows that should his son keep the scholorship and his family NOT make a large donation, pay another student's tutition or some other grand gesture of a thank you that it WILL hurt his brand. Most of his clients come from a financial place where that scholorship could make or break their lives and should they stop supporting him it could cost him business. So, I trust that this family will make an honorable decision with out disrespecting the school or his fans.

ETA: With the information that he may not have an on field spot on the football team, and obviously he has earned it, I support his father making a large donation or helping another student(s) with tution ... he is famous for bringing on apprentices - let them be paid w/ schooling.

He earned it. And I'm sure Diddy will give a lot of money to the UC system - way more than $54,000. Lord knows we need it!!

Yes he did earn it. However, given his Dad's wealth, I would hope that he
would ask the school if he could pay it forward and give it to a needy student. However, not sure how that works though. If it cannot be transferred, then dear ole Dad needs to make a big donation or pay for another students tuition (that needy student).

My daughter's boyfriend plays college football in California...Not at UCLA. MamaR is right, it is about having that secured spot on the team not about $54,000. Yea Diddy, come spend some money in Southern California!!!

What someone else should do is none of my business. I apologize. I'm sorry, that came out harsher than I meant it!!. I just mean it makes my head hurt to think about that much $$$$$. I wouldn't know where to begin with what they could do with it.

I'm sure the school and the students will see a whole lot of money from the Combs family before it's all said and done.

According to DH: football teams are only allowed a certain number of scholarship players, so if he accepts it he is automatically on the roster. If he declines it he becomes a walk-on and they don't have to put him on the roster, so he would be obligated to a school he chose so he could play football and he's not on the roster to play. In other words it might be more about the team spot than the money. Regardless, daddy should pony up a large donation to the school.

I think I need to claim that my son is P. Diddy's love child and get him to pay my house off before it goes to foreclosure. Bwahahahaha.

I think his son earned it and has a right to the scholarship - good for him - not relying on Dad's money.

Did he earn it? Yes...does he have every right to it, yes. But in my mind, there is no way, shape or form that he should take it. A scholarship is to help pay for college. He needs NO help and should pass on this so that someone who needs it more can use it.

It's wonderful that he received it, but perhaps he should donate $54,000 to a student who clearly deserves HELP to become the physician, lawyer, physicist - whatever that student's dream is - but he or she doesn't have the funds to achieve that dream.

I would hope that they offer to give it back since they can afford the tuition. However, he did earn it just like anyone else (no matter how much money daddy has) so he legally doesn’t have to.

I think he should be able to keep it, however since his family can clearly afford to send him to any college in the world, I think his parents should start a scholarship. This way it will give the person who may have really needed that scholarship, and didn't get it, be able to go to college. It would be a great way of giving back. It could even be an athletic scholarship or an acedemic or both. I know my daughters will need scholarships when the time comes. We emphasize good grades over and over. Great question, makes you think.

I think he should keep it. He earned it throguh his own abilities. I'm sure his dad will donate to the school as well. And to other charities. I wouldn't say he shouldn't get it just because of who his dad is, anymore than he should get it because of who his dad is.

I agree with other responders--he earned his scholarship, he should keep it. I know P.Diddy is an extreme example, but not all parents pay for their kids' college education. I had to earn my way myself with scholarships or pay for the difference, as did my siblings.
