Jff-if It Can Happen to Me, It Can Happen to You

I'm over here shaking my head at myself because for the last 22 or so years, once or twice a week I've used a gritty scrub on my face. Brands over the years have changed as my prefernces have changed, but regardless, I like how they make my facial skin feel after I use them.

Well, stupid me, I never realized how much eye physicians HATE gritty scrubs on the face as those gritty pieces can get into the eyes and cause problems. Last monday I kept feeling like something was in my eye when I'd blink but it wasn't constant. After 5 days of this annoying thing and trying to flush my eye myself, I called my eye doctor who took one look and said, "yep, you've cut your cornea". After discussing how in the world I did that, IT WAS THE GRITTY SCRUBBER!! I ended up getting patched and getting eye drops I've had to put in my eye every 2 hours. This has been the most obnoxious thing to heal on my body ever! Out with gritty scrubbers on my face now!

So what stupid thing have you done that you'd like to share so we can all avoid the same mistake?

What can I do next?

I usually use very very little. What brand did you use? What about a scrubby sponge instead?

Friend learned not to swim in a pond with his contacts in. Got an infection in his eye that took forever to resolve.

Been there done exactly that!

BTW now I use Aveeno Clear Complexion Scrub Pads. THey work great!!

And then this morning's stupid thing... in a hurry and I needed to move my husbands car out of the driveway - well it would not move... after getting out and looking to see if something was blocking the wheels I manged with much awful noise to get it back into the road. Well then halfway blocking the road I could not get it to go forward! After figuring out where the 4-way flashers were and turning them on, I had to leave the car 1/2 in the street while asking my husband (who was in the shower) what was going on... turn out the parking brake was on! But I had no idea how to disengage it. In my last 3 cars it was on the center console where the gear shift was. His car has a lever on left... once I found it... it was a serious duh moment.

Oh and a good but duh moment.... I finished paying my bills for the month and realized I had made a mistake in my budget and have about $500 more than I thought I would! Hooray now I can get the tires for my car!!

I went through a phase where I jabbed my eye with my mascara brush not once, not twice, but THREE different times in about 2 years! I went to the emergency room and did the whole cornea scratched, eye patch, drops routine.

One time I chopped fresh jalepenos and proceeded to adjust my contact lens. I put my contacts in their container and had to lay down with a cold rag on my eyes for hours. The next day when I put my contacts back in my eyes I realized I hadn't cleaned them well so they still had the jalepeno juice on them from the day before. Talk about painful. What's the proverb -- "As a dog returns to it's vomit, so a fool returns to his folly."

Those scrubers also tear up your skin and damage it. The stupid things I have done lately I am sure are things people already know to avoid. Like leaving the stove on. Twice this week!

Oh my gosh . . . I had a corneal scratch and it was MISERABLE! That was one of the worst pains - ugh.

I got mine opening a toy for my then toddler son (sitting on my lap). It was tied to the box with one of those bread-tie type things, and he bounced his head near me and I accidentally poked myself in the eye with that wire tie.

I couldn't go in the light for a day or two it hurt that badly. Seemed like it took years to heal completely - occasionally I would rip it open after a bout of dry eye.

Eeek I feel so sorry for you!

Never park on a small cul de sac that is decorated with stone. Or if you do, take your time backing out. My bumper now is dented and DH has yet to notice :-)

I can't tell you how many times I've finished cutting Thai chilies, or seranos, and immediately itched my eye. The first thing out of my mouth is me telling myself, "YOU! are a dumbass!" as I writhe in pain and try to wash it out. Of course that isn't as bad as the one time dh forgot he had handled chilies and we got frisky...in the woods...the bathroom was 50 feet away and I had to take a dark cold shower because of that. *crossing my legs in memory*

Ohhhh, that is good advice! I use that stuff too and I swear last week I had "something" in my eye for 2 days that ws driving me crazy! I bet it was that! I am not going to use that stuff anymore. I recall my mom having a scratched corena (dont remember how it happened) but she also said it was horrible and took forever to heal. Thanks for sharing!!! Trying to think of a good one to share... I'll get back to you on that if I can think of one!
