Hey Mama's,

I have had my Mirena IUD since May and have had lower abdominal pain off an on since November. I saw my OB in Nov and she said that things are normal and my IUD is in the correct place. Last week I started having this pains again and they are 10 times worse than before, I called the office and I have an appt on Friday for sonogram to see where my IUD is. I haven't been able to feel the strings since shortly after my appt in Nov. nor have I had a "period" in quite a while (though I have heard this is normal with an IUD). Yesterday I started having really bad breast pain and soreness and tailbone pain in addition to the lower abdominal pain. Has anyone else experienced this more than 6 months after have a Mirena IUD inserted.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your wonderful answers, I just can't believe that drs. don't believe us when we say we have problems. I'm going to the dr tomorrow to get to the bottom of what is wrong with me. ******UPDATE****** The Drs. office just called they are getting me today at 2:00 so we will see what the problem is. I will update everyone tomorrow.******UPDATED******The Dr. I saw yesterday said that he to couldn't feel the strings so he wanted to do a sono just to make sure it was still in there. It was in the correct spot but the strings were probably coiled up. He said I don't have any infections that he could see or feel but he did some swabs and had some blood drawn to run some tests to verify that. He said it is more than likely just a hormone imbalance and we have two options take out the IUD and start oral BC again, or leave the IUD in for a little while longer and still start on oral BC for the hormones and not the BC really and see if that helps us. My husband I decided that we should give the IUD every chance we can so we are going to leave it in and see if the BC helps my issues. Thank you again for the great advise.

I had a Mirena for almost a year. I started out well and then I had the constant pain. I really think that my body was trying to get rid of it....I'm one of those people who is allergic to EVERYTHING. I had some of the same symptoms, but they didn't last very long. I really believe I may have had a short pregnancy. In any case, it has been removed and I fell SO MUCH BETTER!

I also think that it's insame that the doctor won't get you in until Friday. I had the Paraguard IUD for over a year and finally decided to have it removed becuase of the heavy bleeding and anemia. Have you taken a PG test? If you are experiencing more pain than you can handle I think I would try to get into another doctor today or take myself to the ER. Tubal PG are nothing to mess around with and until you can rule it out, I would be very concerned. Trust your gut feelings, you are your best and only advocate for quality health care.

I had Mirena for nine months of hell. The cramping started less than a month after it went in, and I got to the point where I was running fever and had bad smell and my OBGYN still said Mirena couldn't be causing all of that.

I had another doctor pull it and two weeks later I was fine.

I hate that stupid thing.

I am not very familiar with IUD but my friend wanted to start using my OB GYN and she had IUD. My doctor would not even see her until she had it removed and he won't even consider giving it to his patients. Therefore, I have a bad feeling about them. I am not trying to scare you, but before you keep it in much longer, you might want to check it out alot more. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

I've had the Mirena IUD for about 6 months. I had cramps for about the first 3 months but nothing since then. I have a very light period each month but have heard that in some women is stops completely. I can't feel my string either but at my last check up was told the positioning was fine.

I haven't had the extream pains only the little bits here and there and they told me the same thing, but as soon as I read the "I haven't been able to feel the strings..." I stopped and felt I should reply. Not sure if you told the doctors office that quote, but making you wait until friday is crazy.. They should of had you in that day! There can be some serious factors including a tubular pregnancy or worse...not ever being able to have kids again... I wish you the best of luck and hope your pain goes away soon.

Edit- I've had mine since Sept. '05

Hi J.,

I also had problems with the Mirena, but they eventually settled down-took about 7 months and I still spot bleed after having sex for about a day. But... I had a traditional IUD many years ago and it sounds the same. It caused so many problems that I had to remove it. It was extremely painful, had 10 day periods that would almost incapacitate me. Everyone's body is different, you may just want to get rid of it and try another form of birth control. Sorry you are having so many problems.

Hi J.! I have had the Mirena since July and I am still having issue with my choice to use this as birth control. It HURTS when my husband and I are together and I cramp the entire next day. I have virtually lost my sex drive (which is extremely unusual for me). Every time I have complained to my doctor, he basically dismisses my concerns. If you want different information than what your physician is telling you...just Google the Mirena and check out some blogs. Your Doc is most likely going to tell you that it is alright, so you need to make an informed choice on whether you want to keep the IUD. Every person is different and your body may be trying to eject this foreign device. Good luck!

I have a friend that this happened to last week. It was not the IUD. It was a cyst on her ovary. It was too small to do surgery. I would make an appt with your obgyn. He was able to give her pain pills and some medicine to get rid of the cyst.

After I had my youngest I had the Mirena IUD interested and was in constant Severe pain for 6 months and had it removed and the pain went away.

I recommend you have it removed and try another method of birth control.
Good luck and I hope this helps.
