My son is 4 months old almost 5 on the 23rd, well okay my son started saying ah-goo when he was about 2 1/2 to 3 months and babbling away as if he was having the greatest conversation of his life, and right about when he turned 4 months he completely stopped now he just grunts and laughs which I love but is it normal for him to just have stopped like that???? Someone in my fiance's family said it's because we tickled him is this true? has anyone else had this happen please help Im worried he wont talk when he's supposed to.

What can I do next?

First of all, he didn't stop talking because you tickled him. That is the silliest advice I've ever heard.

My baby cooed and gooed and then stopped. I have video of my daughter saying I love you at 9 weeks from mimicing the sound I made but then stopped and has just barely started sayin it now at 21 months.

They learn, master it and move on to new things He's probably ready for the next challenge so teach him something new.

Hi A.. Because you tickled him? Man, that is an old wive's tale if I have ever heard one. Your son is fine. My son is going to be 2 in September and he barley spurts out anything. All the mothers on here told me not to worry. Some babies talk faster than others. He babbles like a brook too, but when it comes to getting the words out of him....well, it hasn't been too good. I started saying things funny...like I'd say, "Jake, you want a bath? (on the word bath I'd make funny faces and kind of high pitch scream it). Now, he'll tell me BA-BA!! and point to the bathroom. Just give your son time and patience...and forget about that tickling thing. Even a doctor would tell you that is nonsense. Good luck and Best Wishes, T.

You know, before I sent this I happened to read through it again. If your baby is only 5 months old, you surely don't have ANYTHING to worry about. Most babies I know don't start talkign until at least 1 1/2 years old. Bye bye.

I agree, that's silly of his family to say that he stopped doing that stuff because you tickled him. don't believe that! He's probably just focusing on developing other skills right now....that sometimes happens with babies/kids. He might be focusing on learning a large motor skill right now such as turning over, sitting up, etc. and so he's just put the language skills on hold for now. Nothing to worry about at all!

A., you are doing fine. your baby is still a baby and you cannot expect that he will learn or stop learning at this young age. Be careful not to pay too much attention to the comments that are not realistic from the inlaws. Babies all learn at their own pace and if your son is already beginning to emulate what you are doing ~ he is doing fine.

My mother used to insist that we do not stand the babies up on thier legs until 10 months because they were not ready to walk before that and doing so would cause them to be bowl-legged. Upon reading on my own, babies legs are bowed out due to being bent and crammed in the womb and their legs unfold gradually. I followed it up with the Ped and she said it was a wives tail and smiled.

Tickle your baby! They love the close interaction and fun time with Mom and Dad. My daughter (that is now 5) did the same thing. Around 5 months all she would do is growl and grunt at us and everyone she met. Sure, we'd get strange looks in the grocery store but she is a happy, well adjusted, very talkative kindergartener. Relax and have fun with your baby!
