Is This Good for Him?

I have a freind who gives her 6 month old a wipe when she canges him. She lets him suck on the wipe. She says it keeps him from squirmming on th echanging table and that its o.k since the wipes are clean. I don't think this is good for the baby. Should I tell her to stop doing this or is it o.k for the baby?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your help. I did suggest alternitive things for her to give to her baby. She tried my suggestion and now he plays with a toy or a diaper rash ointment container. She does not let him out the disper rash container in his mouth.

I can't imagine that it would be safe for him as it has chemicals in it. I often have to provide the babies with something to hold onto while changing them, but if it has to be something to suck on I would suggest a wash cloth instead.

I really don't think that is good for the baby. Look on the box and see what is in the wipes, they might be alcohol free, but there is other stuff that is not safe if injested.

Besides that being really gross, it is very dangerous because of the choking hazard. If she lets her baby play with it too long it can tear and the baby can choke on a tiny little piece. The problem is, this is not your baby, and we moms tend to get defensive when confronted about how we raise our children. You may want to do something subtle next time you are with your friend and she does this, like grab a teething toy or something the baby likes and see if he will drop the wipe and grab the safe toy. I wouldn't attack her parenting skills if you still want to be friends with her. Honestly, I have never heard or thought of doing this when changing a baby. Tickling and playing with my babies usually did the trick to keep them where I needed them. But, every mom is different.

You would have to read the ingredients on that particular product. Many products contain toxins - even wipes so it really depends on what brand she is using.

I would definately tell her to stop doing it. She could give her child a small toy to hold instead.

But to be on the safe side go online and read up on that product before you say anything..

i don't know if it causes problems or not, but I would tell her to be safe and use a wet washrag instead. The wipes have chemicals on it that should at least cause diarhea. I would say to be careful with using wipes that way because the baby may grab a dirty one without his mom realizing until it's too late

No, it's probably not good for him. That being said, I dont' think you can tell your friend to stop doing something with her son. If you do, she will be more likely to dig her heels in and resent you telling her how to parent. You could probably come up with a more diplomatic way of saying it. Maybe just mention that you are concerned about the chemicals in the wipes and suggest that she read the ingredient list and decide if she is also concerned. He might be just as happy with a toy; we keep a couple on the changing table that we only give DD when she is getting changed. Maybe he would like a wet washcloth instead. If you frame your concern right, she will probably be willing to consider what you are saying. If you hand down orders, she will most likely ignore your advice and also resent you "bossing" her.

Best of luck,
S.

I would say no. My son used to get hold of those wetwipes and suck on them and it gave him the runs. Does that baby need to ingest the chemicals from the wipes. No

The wipes are safe. If they weren't, we shouldn't wipe our children with them. I have friends and my aunt who let their babies play with wipes for a short while. Baby products like that need to be non toxic because they are easy for babies to get into on their own.

The tiny amount of soap in a wet wipe isn't enough to do the baby any harm. I've occasionally given a wet wipe to my child during diaper changes - it's novel enough to hold their attention and keep them from squirming. I don't believe that it is detrimental. Sometimes a mom's gotta do whatever she can to get through a diaper change!

When my kids were little I gave them a toy to hold and play with while I changed them. It always worked,my mother showed me how to do that when my brothers kids were little and any other kids who we watched. I am really glad she did that, I always carried more than one toy in the diaper bag just for that. Hope this helps.

No, it is not good for her. There are a lot of things kids can suck on to keep them from squirming while getting their diapers changed. Perhaps to make it easier to tell your friend you could get a small 'chew' toy and wrap it as a gift. Chemicals even in natural wipes are not intended for oral intake.
Good for your for being a concerned friend.
Good luck,

Wipes aren't just water...doesn't she know there's other "stuff" in it? That's why wipes hurt so bad when babies have diaper rash. If she really wants him to suck on it tell her to rinse it out really well with water before giving it to him.

I wouldn't say it is "bad" for him, but it isn't good! Ask her this, "would you suck on a wipe?" If her answer is no, then why would she want him. My rule: If it aint good enough for me, it aint good enough for my child....
We give our 6.9mo. old daughter a rattle or toy during diaper changes, and lotion. I can understand your friend wanting to occupy his hands (especially since he has an extra appendage to discover), but I would think the ingredients in the wipes could give him diarreah (s/p) or something. Tell her to give him a small toy to manipulate instead.

I don't think this is a good idea. Have your friend read the ingredients list on the box. Hello? Why would you want your baby sucking on that! Give a gental suggestion of maybe a clean wet wash cloth or teething ring. I understand you concern.

All 7 of mine have sucked on baby wipes, and torn them out of their boxes, it really isn't that big of a deal. I wouldn't let them suck on them for hours on end, but every once in a while really is no reason to worry about. So although you wouldn't let your baby do it, I see no reason why your friend can't.

I don't know how good it is for him, but it has never hurt my kids. I have let all 4 of them play with/chew on wipes. I always make sure they are just plain wipes no added scents or other ingredients. I think I will ask the pediatrician at my sons next visit.

Wipes aren't intended to be eaten or sucked on...they are intended to clean a baby's dirty bottom... I would say no. It may not hurt the baby initially, but it could cause an affect later on. Chemicals are not good to ingest period. There are safer things that could preoccupy the baby. Each to there own, but I know I would never let my daugther suck on wipes or anything else with chemicals.

Oh please- if it is just for a few minutes, occasionally to occupy his hands- big deal- I do it too. It isn't like you are letting him do it for hours. They will tear it and look at it too, so he isn't sucking on it that long, plus, my dd gets it wetter when she puts it in her mouth, so she probably isn't sucking much out of it anyway.

AND- if you want to start talking about TOXINS listed on the label, start by paying attention to the ingredients labels on the foods you feed your babies- do you know what toxins are in formula, or how about the mac & cheese box you may have opened yesterday or the chicken mcnuggets you fed your child at MC Donalds yesterday??? These are the toxins everyone should be paying attention to!

Absolutely not!! I read in the paper of a mom who did that and then forgot that the baby had the wipe and choked on it-it was fatal. Not to mention the chemicals that can be in the wipes if they are not natural. Give that baby a teething toy or a baby mirror to look at while being changed. PLEASE TELL HER TO STOP!!

I don't know for sure whether this is medically safe or not, thought I think it is fine. That said I do the same thing as do many of my friends. I have 4 kids (4, 2 1/2, 9 month old twins) and they are all fine. I am not sure I would say anything to your friend. If you must say something how about if you ask her if she has asked her doctor if this is ok. That may make her think about it a little more and get the facts from someone who knows. I would be curious what a doctor would say.

I do not agree with you or the other post before mine. My daughter loved to have a wipe to hold and sometimes she did chew on it. Look, if you think they are that dangerous, then you should not use them on your childs private areas either! Do you use wipes? (this is more towards the post previous to mine). Maybe you should not because they are "dangerous". Really, I think you should keep your comments to yourself with your friend. It will come across as everything she is doing is not right. Wipes have never harmed a child no matter what end they are used on. If the wipe was dirty when she lets him chew on it, that is different, Ewwww! Don't worry and enjoy your friendship! You will not always agree with what she does, but you are not always right...
