Is There a Way or a Site That Will Help Me Find Out Who Owns a Company?

I need to find out who owns a particular company. If more than one person, can I also find out what percentage of the company each partner owns? Is there a website, an email or a number I can call to research this? The company is located in Chicago but I'm not sure if it makes a difference. Any assistance is appreciated.

If it is a publicly traded company, I would think that should be easy to find out. (stock reports, etc.)
If it's private, that will be more difficult.

Illinois has a business entity search site when an inc, Corp, LLC, or partnership is registered. Google business entity search Illinois. Also better business bureau site, and if a publicly traded company, rather than private, federal business tax disclosures are also available online now. These are all the kinds of sites I use when suing someone and need owner/president or registered agent info for a biz...I am an atty. Good luck!

Don't all businesses have to be registered with the state? You should be able to contact your Secretary of State and find out who signed the Articles of Incorporation for the company. Sometimes the registered agent is not the owner, but whoever the registered agent is, that is whom you would need to contact with legal matters.

Each company produces a yearly financial report. The information you are looking for will be mentioned in the report.

You should be able to contact them and request one, especially if they are publicly traded.

If it's a public company, you can start with Hoovers.com. Hoover's has a lot of business information and is part of Dun & Bradstreet (D&B), which issues DUNS numbers for corporations that people can use to track information. You can start with those (probably faster than government LOL) but if you can't get anything there, there will be state agencies that have this information.

Can't you just ask the appropriate people at the company..... unless there is some underhanded reason you are digging for info?

We own our company LLC, private, and quite frankly it is no ones business in how we have it set up except for our tax/legal counsel and IRS.

However, if someone , like you, had a valid reason for asking, we would sit down and chat about it.

I know there are ways to check us out of course, hire a PI.
