What if I never tell my daughter that Santa is real or not real. Just because I want to avoid the subject when she finds out he's not. But then she comes up to me one day and asks if he is real. What shoul my answer be?

I am 32 years old. If I asked my mother today, she would tell me he is real. She still gives us stockings on Christmas, saying that Santa brought them to her house. I think you can just sort of "wink" and never change your story. I never felt like my mom was lying to me, but I could tell that she thought it was fun and wanted to keep doing it.

We tell our kids he not real. But the real story behind it. They love the stories but realize it is just a story. We don't want enforce false info. We do also teach them to respect other people beliefs. Not to force theirs on other kids. To us we believe Christmas now days has lost really what it truly about and don't want our kids get lost into for what it became. This is just our way.

When my oldest asked if Santa was real I did the "Well I know that if I were you I'd beleive" thing and that worked for a short while, but not long (she had friends with older siblings). So when she asked and told me to tell her the truth, I did. But I also told her the story of St. Nick (at least as best as I knew it) and told her that he was a real man, but he had died years ago. But that it's just something fun that parents like to do for Christmas. I told her that playing Santa was as much for for us as for her.

Hi T.,

It is hard but I was honest. You want your kids to rely on YOU to be the truth teller. They need to trust you. I told my children there was a real Santa at one time. And then explained the story of the real Santa. And everyone liked the idea so much that they decided we should each be like a Santa. And it's so much fun to give gifts that you know people really want or need and it makes you feel good to give.

And then of course the reason we celebrate Christmas is because Christ is the greatest gift of all.

It might not work for long, but first try answering the question with "what do you think?" or "I sure hope so!"
