Is It Safe for 14 Month Old to Sleep with Baby Blanket?

Is it safe yet? I know you can use a blanket that is properly tucked into the end of the mattress but when is it safe for a good old-fashioned loose baby blanket that he can have his way with in the crib? I don't want to take ANY risks and although I know the SIDS risk is down after 12 months, isn't there still a risk of suffocation or overheating?

What can I do next?

Like a couple others, I have used crochet blankets with both kids, because of the holes (big enough for me to stick my finger through, and therefore a baby to breathe). I used them from about 6 months on. I do notice, though that the kids stay warm, warmer than me. Just keep tabs on how hot/cold he is and adjust blankets/clothes to fit.

Hi! I use receiving blankets on my 11 month old. That way I know it is not too heavy for her to pull off.

Between the time my son was 13 months old and 2 years I only used a light, fleece blanket. Now I can actually use a toddler size comforter but at 14 months I would still use something that is fairly light for him to kick off of himself. You also don't want him to overheat because that's dangerous too.

there is little that is totally risk-free. this risk here is miniscule. i'd give that baby a blankie.

our little boy has been sleeping with with "blankie" for a few months now, and he's 14 months. He's been fine, and he mostly sleeps on scrunched up on his belly with his arms wrapped around the blanket and his butt in the air. :)
It's how he sleeps best. I think at by 14 mos, it's fine.

I believe that the risk of SIDS drops drastically at six months and even before that is extremely small. I think you are being overly cautious almost to the point of paranoia. My babies always slept with blankets. At 14 months can't your child easily kick the blanket off? My older son sometimes likes to sleep with the blanket pulled up over his head. Your baby is not going to suffocate.

It's safe now. The only thing is will he keep it on....My kids are 5 and 3 and they either never want a blanket on or kick it off while sleeping.

Yes it's safe. There is risk of suffocation and over heating when you use a blanket but that doesn't mean you stop right?

I also wanted to point out they won't keep it on most the time i still even at 6yrs old have my daughter sleep in a blanket sleeper on really cold nights to make sure she's covered.

If your baby can roll from belly to back and back to belly well, then it should be fine for them to have a blanket

14 months old is definitely old enough to sleep with a blanket of any kind. At this age, if they turn their face over the blanket, they'll just turn it way, just like you would. The only thing you don't want is one that has tares in it, since they can be torn larger and looped over the head.

My son is 7 months and we put a crochet blanket on him. He wears a onesie, pjs and a terry wearable blanket. Then we put the other blanket on him. We live in the basement of my in-laws house and its generally around 71* in our room. Sometimes he crawls or rolls out of the blanket, other times he stays covered.

I prefer using that blanket because it has the "holes" where I feel that if he pulls it over his head he will still be able to get airflow.

He also has a small security blankie that he sleeps with.

I didn't read everyone's response, so I'm sorry if this is a repeat. Could you put it in the crib with him, during his nap and spy on him? I've done this with both my sons when it was possible.

When you can find footy fleece sleepers (blanket sleepers), they're great cause the kids usually kick off the blankets, thus the tradition of tucking our kids back in when WE go to bed! But yes, a blanket is fine.

At 14 mo you should get a good supply of the sleepers at places like Carter's (try to catch sales). I found sleepers for my five year old at Target this year, 12 or 13 apiece. Not bad!

Y'know, mommyhood is stressful enough, especially with the first kid; if you're more comfortable tucking it in for now, I see nothing wrong with that. When your kid wants it un-tucked and can do it himself, then you can REALLY relax about it.

I like afghans because they're pretty hole-y and it's unlikely a kid would smother himself with it. And they're WARM! My kid still loves hers. Make one double strand and it's even toastier.
