Sleeping Under to Covers

At what age did you let your infants sleep with a blanket? My 3 year old has always been a hot sleeper, so this did not come up with her. However my 8 month old son wants a blankie or something to cuddle. I put him in footie PJ's and all, but sometimes in the middle of the night he calls for me and I will put in his binkie and place a blanket over the lower half of his body and then he will sleep like a champ. Did you wait at least a year for a blanket due to the SIDS risk factor?

What can I do next?

I covered my son and daughter with a light blanket when they were 6 months old(they were sleeping on their stomachs).

I think blankies are okay from the start. Just make sure it is a breathable one.

He should be fine. My lil one started sleeping with his blankie on a regular basis once he could roll over (dr said it was OK at that point, SIDS risk was almost none).

I started giving a blanket to my oldest around the year mark. We used the zip up blanket sleepers until then -the Halo sleep sacks and some we found at Carter's. He definitely had his stuffed frog lovey in bed long before that though. At 8 months, he should be fine with a lovey/stuffed animal.

My 10 month old daughter has been sleeping with a blankie since she was 4-5 months old. It's about the size of a cloth diaper with a silky border. I know they put a scare in us with SIDS, but if your child is old enough to roll over to determine his/her sleeping position, they are old enough to have a blankie without causing worry.

Well.... I did give both kids a "lovey" blanket, but they were both blankets that my grandmother had crocheted for them, so they were very open-- an open crochet that had lots of holes in the design, so there wasn't much danger of suffocation or anything. My son was like yours-- always warm-- but when my daughter was cold, I used one of those sleep sacks-- not pj's, but the kind that looks like a big bag that you zip up the front, and you put it on right over the pj's. They are nice and fleecy and warm, and you can put them over heavy pj's when it's cold, or just over a onesie if it's warm, and they feel like being wrapped in a blanket. I just felt a little safer using those, and they're easy to find and fairly inexpensive.

Supposedly once they can lift their head and roll over on their own the risk decreases significantly. I started using a blanket around 7 months I am sure. I would make sure there is nothing else in the bed, though. Also, my doc said that the pacifier and using a fan in the room decrease the risk of SIDS as well. The fan circulates air so if he does have his face close to the blanket the carbon dioxide won't build up, and the binki makes sure they breathe through their nose. If you are really scared, try a sleep sack. Maybe that will work.

Good luck!

My almost 10 month old has always slept with a blanket. I can't imagine falling asleep every night without one myself so I would never expect her to. She has even slept with two blankets at the point where she would kick one off in the middle of the night and it would cause her to wake up. The weight of the blankets seems to help her get cozy and stay asleep. She also slept in our bed for the first six months under our covers.

Forgive my shock, but I find that rather surprising! lol I've always had my children sleep with blankets, since day one. Never heard of not giving them a blanket to sleep with. I really wouldn't worry about it. I give my children blankets and I cover them up to their neck with it. They've all lived. :P

(I've also never laid my kids on their back.) When I had my first they said to not lay them on their backs or tummies...just the side...now they say to put them on their backs, not side or tummy. Well, NONE of my kids liked the back thing...so I didn't do it.

Seriously though, give him a blanket...I like to cuddle too. Think about it you wore sweats to bed...it really isn't comfortable!

Your son is past the age where SIDS is a big risk. Putting a blanket over his feet or just laying it next to him to cuddle is fine. He can roll over in his bed so he is safe.

Use your best judgement. I think blanket sleeper and a blanket placed over the lower half of his body sounds pretty safe. By 8 months, the chance of SIDS is very low. Summer's here! Yay!
