Is It Possible for Toddlers to Get Yeast Infections?

My daughter just turned 3, so she is due for a well check very soon anyway. But I am concerned.... About a month ago, she had a bad fall off of a playground set and ended up getting a superficial vaginal tear near the perineum from the way she landed on the ladder rung. The urgent care DR recommended nothing, just said it would heal on its own. No antibiotic ointment or anything at all. It took about 2 weeks and the tear is definitely better, but she was very sore there for a while. I am not sure if subconsciously she wasn't wiping as well after using the bathroom, trying to 'protect' herself and maybe she got an infection? For about 2 weeks she complains off and on that her hiney hurts. I look at it, and it seems very red and sore, almost chafed around her vulva and urethra. Sometimes she says it hurts when she pees and she tries to lean forward and that seems to help give her relief. It's like when you pull back the skin there are just 2 red lines there (on either side) that just look so sore. I am not sure if I can use diaper cream in that area? When she had diaper rash I never used the cream in that area, only near the rear. To me, if this was happening to me... I would use some Vagisil cream to help soothe it, but I don't know that I can use than on her or if that is even what she would need? I plan on calling the DR tomorrow regardless but was hoping that someone on here could maybe give me some ways to help her in the mean time. I bathe her every day or every other day at the least and each time she lays down in the bath tub and I have her bend her knees then so I can wipe in the folds of her skin there and stuff with the washcloth. She screams. No matter how soothing I am and gentle. I am not sure if it really is that sore, or if she is just scared still remembering the pain from her fall.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

She is seeing her pediatrician. They couldn't get her in until tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday) though. I will update again after we see them. Thanks in the meantime.

*********** Ok I took her to the PED today and they said it is an infection. Vaginitus type. It can come from antibiotics, bath soaps not rinsed well, not wiping well, ect. Hers most likely from not wiping as well considering her recent accident. They said I can use Neosporin CREAM -not- ointment. They said the ointment is very irritating and not to use that. They also said to have her drink cranberry juice or cran apple if she likes that. And yogurt. He also said sometimes taking showers can help, or using a hand held shower head with the long hose. I have this already and use it to rinse my daughters hair after we wash it in the tub. Embarrassingly enough I did try to use this tonight after her bath to rinse her bottom as well. I used the lightest gentle spray setting, and she just laughed hysterically and said it tickled and kept backing away from it and squeezing her knees together. It was funny enough, and i dont want to force it if it makes her feel uncomfortable. He also said to just make sure to pat dry the area well after showering and using the bathroom. Even recommended using a hair dryer on low setting from a distance to dry it. i DID NOT try this. after her reaction to the shower head, I just felt weird about the whole thing and just assumed that would make her uncomfortable too so I just patted it try with the towel.

Thanks again for the responses, and I hope my experience will help another Mom out there who comes across this post someday. it's always something! :o)

oh and i almost forgot... they did check her urine and it came back fine. that was fun trying to catch it in the cup! oh my!

My daughter is also 3 and we have had infections down there before where it was red and chaffing around the butt hole I used Lamisile and it goes away within a day or two but I would call the Ped just to ask if there is anything else you could use or have him/her have a look just to be safe!

It could be either but kids can get yeast infections so it's good your calling the dr. You can try a cold compress and eating yogurt with it's healthy bacteria also helps!

If you give your daughter bubble baths that could be the problem. I don't see in your post if you do or not, but just something I thought I'd put out there. :) Good luck.

My 9 mo. old daughter gets diaper rash all the time, which is more of the yeast/fungal kind, no matter how frequently I change her diapers, and she gets a bath every single day. It gets red just like that in the folds on the sides. The only thing that works is Nystatin, which you get by prescription. It clears it up almost like magic. (Regular diaper cream doesn't work, except to soothe it a little or to protect the skin from getting too damp and encouraging the yeast rash.)

Your daughter probably does have some soreness, so I'd just be extra gentle and don't use the washcloth there for awhile, and no soap either. Just warm water. Doc still needs to look at her though.

please forgive me for being brief...
yes, little girls can get yeast infections...little boys can also, according to my ped. both my son and daughter at different times have had them. i was told by the ped. to use either lamisil (the athlete foot cream) or the 7 day monistat cream, both work excellently. my daughter got hers from not cleaning well, so it can cause it, my son gets them anytime he's teething, has had antibiotics and if he has had extra wet diapers. i hope this helps!

Hello. I know it is defintely possible for a child to get a yeast infection. A friend of mine son (18 months) got one. (uncircumsized and wasn't getting clean enough) Best bet is to see what the Dr. says. I can't believe that the ED Dr. couldn't or wouldn't give you any care advice. What did your Pedi say after that?

I also see you are looking for moms to share with. Where do you live. I am also a stay at home mom and am starved for Adult conversation! I have tried some mothers groups but everytime I showed up for a meeting (playground or such) I was the only one who showed. After 3 times, I gave up! I live in New Tripoli.

Yikes, awful injury for such a little lady. My thought process is that it would be a similar injury to a birthing tear - though not as deep, and if that is the case, she very well could be less efficient with cleaning herself and could have a bacterial infection, bladder infection, who knows what kind of infection... I would have her rechecked by your pediatrician before using anything topical or OTC just to be sure. I hope she feels better soon.

Hi J.,
Yes, it is possible your little angel could have a yeast infection. Don't put any OTC creams on her that they sell for adults. They're too strong for her. She will need to see her pediatrician to get a prescription that's gentle enough for little people her own age. Also, cut out juice, white breads, sugars (including fruits) for a couple of days. Have her drink lots of water and try to do a serving of yogurt a day. Yeast thrive on sugar and the less she has in her little body right now, the sooner she'll get to feeling better. (We've been though this already, can you tell?)

Best of luck to her on a speedy recovery!

As soon as she started complaining you should have called the Ped. Use the diaper rash cream to help, just don't get it into her "area". Only cleaning the area won't help a YI. It's an infection and may need a round of anibiotics depending on severity. Yogurt helps, but get her to the Ped. ASAP. I hope that she feels better and good luck.
