Is It Okay to Fall Apart Now?

Here's the back story. A family friend bought my then very young son an iPod Nano and a road trip FM transmitter for the car.. It was first gen. I thought it was ridiculous to give it to him as a toddler(he'll be eight very soon), so it stayed in a drawer. For the last year, I've been playing his playlists in the car or for him as noise to get him to sleep.

I lost it a little bit ago coming from visiting my Mother's, and have been tearing apart the whole house this week looking for it(not so awesome seeing as how I was trying to get it clean for Christmas). I simply cannot believe I lost it from my driveway to the front door.

I've taken to letting him play his music piped through the DVD player and speakers, but I hate the fact that he's got the TV on at night(I do put a blanket over the Living Room TV so it's not glowing).

I seriously cannot believe how a tiny thing can A) be THAT expensive) and B) cause so much stress. Even the refurbished ones are out of my price range right now, as I just used up all of my Christmas savings on presents.

Can I fall apart now?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Everyone! I still haven't found it, but now I don't feel like crud.

The reason he always has music going, is that from the day he was born, I have always had a radio going. He simply cannot go to sleep without music. For that matter, I can't either, for the same reason. My Mother always had the radio going when I was a child, so I now cannot sleep without music(which is not a bad thing because Joshua Bell is amazing)! I can't sleep with the TV on either, it's too bright. Other than the classical station, there isn't a single radio station in my car that my son will listen to, so using the Road Trip(I simply adore it!) was the only way to play quality music for him. The FM transmitters are nice for driving down boring highways that have no scenery. I will be pleasantly surprised if he doesn't end up playing the Violin the way he listens to Joshua Bell.

My very expensive stereo broke, and being on an ultra limited budget I can't replace it. The iPod was a Godsend.

The lights I have on in his room are Supernova LED that change patterns and emit a very soft glow, like watching stars.

Those LED fishlights do not produce the noise he requires, and If you meant a real fish tank, I've bred fish for years before I had my son, and leaving the lights on all the time is not good for the health of the fish.

OMG Jo, where did you find one for so cheap? I've only managed to find refurbished one's for $100.

The road trip is only for iPod's as well. The only way I could have music going was playing mp3's on the DVD player and piping it through the TV, and then I covered the screen so there were no distractions from it.

My very nice speakers are wired into the broken stereo, so I can't pipe the music on the DVD player through them, so I kinda have to have the TV on. I'm so sorry about the sash, I hope it turns up soon! I bet it's out on a hot date with my son's iPod... =p

Oh dear Lord ladies, thank you! It's just been a whirlwind of a year, and it's been one incident of "Murphy" after another, with this taking the cake. *hugs to you all*

I just use the iPod on my phone and plug it into the car speakers. I plug it into external speakers at home.

you sure can fall apart now, I'll be right over to join you.

It was soo bad that i almost called a radio show that had a tarot card reader taking calls today, while i was driving to work.

Then I realized that was pretty low. I don't belive in that and it really isn't that important in the scheme of things.

But the last 3 weeks it sure as heck felt like the most important thing in the world.

"We" can"t find my DD's brownie Sash. Don't know when she had it last. Could have been at a meeting that she took it off to paint a project, could have been out in the woods at camp, could be in my house.

I had 2 events we hosted in our house since "we" think she last had it. and i clean by stashing and dashing so dirty socks in the vase, grocerylists in the freezer, stacks of books in the laundry room.

I have looked in all my usual spaces, I've called the camp and the place she has her meetings. I've checked both our cars. no clue,

what makes it really bad but finally allowed me to release my anxiety is that i knew she had yearbook group photos coming up, Yup they were 2 days ago and i went to bed that night praying that the sash would fall out of the cereal box when i made breakfast in the morning. Nope no sash. so I sent her and she didn't have it and now I'll just go replace it which maybe i should have done in the first place.

oh and did i mention i'm her brownie leader? and these people trust me with their kids. tarot cards and cereal boxes, really, what was i thinking!!

oh and did i mention I'm the airhead that though i left my camera in the help yourself to a candy bowl of treats on my porch at halloween time? yeah, i'm really doing swell.

I assume you've checked all coat pockets?

and for what it's worth my dvd player plays when the tv screen is turned off, so i thought they all did.

anyhow hugs and here's hoping it shows up or that you can just stop worrying about it.

Peeing my pants laughing about your IPOD and my sash out on a "HOT DATE" I"ve been surfing pinterst too much i can see the cartoon drawing of that.

It's always in the last place you looked, and always inside something you never thought to look at.
To make you feel better about important little things getting lost in plain site. I went into labor with my third child in the wee hours of the morning while it was still dark. I sat on the couch while my husband put our other 2 children in the car and a couple other things that needed to go with. For whatever reason he set the keys down on the TV cabinet. When he went to go get them when everything was loaded and we were ready to leave they were nowhere to be found!! He was tearing everything apart, I even tried to look. We couldn't find the spare set either! The only thing we had was the valet key, which does nothing for the car alarm. Thankfully the car was already open so that was not an issue. We just couldn't look anymore as the contractions were getting short and strong so we drove using the valet key. We had to leave the car unlocked the whole labor and delivery! Thankfully it was at a little birth center with a small private lot right behind the building and the staff there kept an eye on it for us. I was glad I had a fairly quick labor and delivery and only had to stay 6 hours after the birth too. Some time after we got home we finally found them under the TV cabinet, tucked into something else that had gotten under there. We found the spare set in a shoe that was hiding under a jacket. It happens to the best of us LOL
I also wanted to make a comment about another comment about a fish tank. Please do not use a fish tank as a night light. Because the fish have no eye lids they can not simply close their eyes and ignore the light. They need that darkness in order to sleep, otherwise they become very stressed and end up getting ill and die. Using a fish tank as white noise is a wonderful idea though. I miss my tank in the living room. It was always so relaxing to listen to the gentle hum of the filter and bubbles. But use something else as a nightlight, not the fish tank light, for the sake of your fish.

why does he need the tv on at night to go to sleep? or music in the car to fall asleep to? if he is almost 8 he can live without one. You can fall apart because I've been known to rip the house apart over little things as well. Some things like the tv and using it for noise is kinda bizarre to me (although to each our own) Why dont you get him a small fish tank with the led lights so he has the white noise with the fish tank and the lights if he doesnt like the dark????

Don't feel too bad. Every single person I know that has ever had a nano, has lost it. Some friends have lost them more than once. If you really need it I'd either by a cheap boom box (they make many that will play MP3s and MP3 disks). Or get him a different type of MP3 player. There are so many options out there, and a great many are quite affordable. I LOVE my $35 player. If you didn't have the music saved, check out CDs at the library and copy the music that way. And there is always the option of just cutting him off from the music while sleeping (although, your panicked tone, tells me there is more to the story.).

Do you need a brand name mp3 player? I have a generic that cost me about $20 bucks two years ago and I just did a quick amazon search and found this one for a similar price:

http://www.amazon.com/Coby-MP620-4GBLK-Video-Player-Radio...

Fifty hours of music only takes up about 3.5GB of space so you'd have quite a lot of space for music storage.

If you want more storage you can buy one of these little cheap mp3 players that take up to an 8GB SD card. You'd have to buy the card seperately but you can always find deals for those on slickdeals.net or newegg.com

http://www.amazon.com/BLUE-Metal-Player-Supports-Micro/dp...

Do a little searching and you can replace what you lost for a pittance. One warning though, as soon as you shell out the money for the replacement, you'll find the one you lost. Never fails.

Sending hugs and sorries your way, L.. I hope that while you were taking things apart looking for it, that you found other stuff you hadn't seen in a while.

Sometimes we find things when we aren't looking for them anymore. I hope that happens to you!

I just bought an iPod nano for 20 dollars, brand new, 8g, no reason to spend more than that.

I'm not sure what everyone said, but I can tell you about a GREAT alternative to the iPod. We got a Sansa player by Sandisk a couple of years for my daughter. I can't BELIEVE how great it turned out to be. They are more like $30. Check on line. We have one that has a little screen so you can see the name of your song. Anyway, might save you. And it sounds, works, stays charged - all wonderfully well!

K, 1st those FM transmitter Ipod things SUCK. So you did not miss anything all these years, ok?

2nd, why not just get him a simple Ipod dock for Christmas. Here's a reasonably priced good one. And if it's too much money, there are many cheaper ones as well.
