Is It Normal for 3 Year Old to Wake up Thirsty Several Times a Night??

My son Henry will be three next month. Lately he wakes up at least 4 times a night complaining that he is thirsty. At first I thought it was just him wanting to get in bed with me so a few nights I let him sleep with me and he still woke up crying several times asking for water. I put a cup of water by his bed but he drinks it all the first time he gets up. And he's not "just" waking up.. he squirms and cries and then wakes up. Any ideas or suggestions?! We both need to get a full nights sleep! Thanks!

EDIT: It is just at night. He drinks about the same as me and my other son during the day.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We went to the pedi this week for the 3 year check up and she suggested making sure he was getting PLENTY of water during the day. So I've been making sure every hour that he drinks some water and he's not gotten up t hirsty since. So for three nights now he's been sleeping! Hooray! Thanks for all your advice, too!

My son (just over 2) wakes up at night thirsty also. Some nights he drinks a ton but other nights he barely sips. I've kept a cup in his bed for months now to help. I just saw a great tip in a parenting magazine for holding cups in a crib; get a cup holder that is made for the car (hangs on the door/window) and place the cup in there. If he drinks all of one the first time he wakes up maybe put 2 or 3 cups in there for him. I would mention it on the next visit to the pediatrician but wouldn't be too worried about it. Good luck, hope you guys get some sleep!

I have heard with some children this is normal/a phase, but typically an onset case of excessive thirst could be a sympton of something else, typically diabetes.

Is he also getting up to go pee a lot at night from all the excess drinking, or does he sweat at night as well? Try to journal all of what i`s going on and bring it up with your pediatriction.

Have you talked with your doctor about this? There could be a medical cause for this.

K.,
I'm a mother of two and have dealt with a few unusual circumstances, but I don't have much knowledge about that. When I read it, what concerned me is that the intense thirst could be a symptom of diabetes.
If you haven't already, let your pediatrician know and he/she could rule that out.
I wish I could be more help,
LeAnn
