Irregular Period and Unusual Symptoms

Hi, I just got my period after 6 weeks which is unusual for me. I don't take birth control and I'm not sexually active so there wasn't a chance that I could be pregnant. My cycle is usually pretty consistent, they are normally approximately a month a part and last 2-3 days. The only thing that I could think of that might cause me to not have a period for so long is I was in a high stress (physically and mentally) environment for three weeks. Could that have caused the delay? I am also concerned because I feel some pain in my lower abdomen, only on my right and left sides, not in the middle. It is kind of a sore feeling and I guess it could be cramps but I usually don't get cramps when I have my period. Are these symptoms normal? Should I be worried that something is wrong or am I just overreacting?

What can I do next?

Stress could definitely cause your period to be late. Since you are having the pain and it and the lateness is unusual, I'd go to your Dr. to check it out. It probably is nothing but you want peace of mind and not add to your stress!! Good luck!

Might be an infection. My SIL had similar issues a few months ago and it was due to on infection.

If you are in your mid-forties...the period changes !

Stress could be a separate factor.

This is worth checking out with an OB-Gyn. Your cycle can fluctuate within about a week due to stress (i.e., 1 week early or 1 week late), but a 2-week delay (that's how I'm reading your reference to 6 weeks -- did I get that right?) is pretty unusual.

If you're in your mid-40s or so, it could be an aspect of perimenopause, but otherwise, schedule a checkup, just to get it figured out.

Stress can mess with your menstrual cycle. Because your cycle was longer than normal, you can have a heavier period than normal and cramping. If you are absolutely 100% sure you cannot be pregnant, then keep track of the dates (1st day of period, how long you bleed and symptoms like cramps, etc).
If you have a fever and or increased pain, that is getting worse...go to the ER.

Have the pain checked out and also have your thyroid levels checked.
