I have a 4S and am happy with it.
Hardly ever use Siri.
Don't forget with a 5 you'll need new chargers/cables.
We are getting new iPhones. My husband is getting a 5, but I'm thinking we could save $100 if I got the 4s rather than a 5. I currently have the 3G and it is fine, so I don't need the newest and greatest necessarily. Is the 5 really that superior? Do you have a 4s and like it?
I am ordering these to surprise my husband for Christmas, so any opinions you can give me this weekend would be appreciated!

The difference between the 4 and 5 is minimal at best.
I just upgraded my husband to the 4 cause it was free. I've have had the 4 for a year and love it. I'll go the 4s or five maybe next year. There just isn't any real reason to do it now.
I've been working in cell phones for 4 years now and to be honest with you if the 4G isn't important, don't bother spending the extra $100. Apple makes a great product so you can't go wrong either way. I carry an android device, but I have had several customers that are very happy with apple. And if siri isn't important either you could save an extra $100 with just iphone 4. Keep in mind its something you'll be stuck with for 2 years, that's something a lot of people don't think about when they are getting a new phone.
My Husband has the 4.
It is great.
He loves it.
He has thought of getting the 5... but he doesn't like the size of it.
The 4 is great.
Really great.
IF you get the 5... keep in mind that you all will have to get new accessories for it, "using it with speaker docks and other accessories built for earlier iPhones and iPods could add up. An adapter costs $29, and the kind of cable included in the box, which allows it to be used with most car- and wall-chargers, will cost $19 if you want to buy an extra."
For people that are heavy iPhone users, ie: for work and personal use, the 5 may be useful and worthwhile. But for a person who does not use the iPhone heavily nor uses ALL its features, why get the 5... ?
I have the 4s and am pretty happy. I will get the 5 once I am ready to upgrade. Good luck.
I have the iphone 4, but I don't have Siri. I don't mind not having that feature. It fits my needs just fine. I love the texting and all the apps. That is all I need at this point. Anything more for me becomes a chore to learn because I am not that tech savvy. I would save the $100!

FYI Walmart has the 4S for $47 and the 5 for $127 with the typical 2 yr contract.

I had a 3GS and wanted to upgrade. I've always been frugal and had the older model phone. When the 5 came out I was going to get a 4S but then decided to treat myself to the newest model this time since I'm always at least one model behind. I got the 5 and I love it but honestly I don't think it's worth the extra $100. The 4S is just as good (from what I've seen of the 4S from friends who have one).
I just finally went "smartphone" myself. I opted for the 4s. I have had it about 2 weeks. I have used Siri exactly zero times. My kids played with it when I took it out of the box, but that is it.
I didn't see the point of paying the extra $100 for the 5. And then all the retro fitting with adapters. We have multiple apple products in our home already, but the 4s is the only phone. (ipods--about 5 of them, and iMac desktop). So far I am plenty happy with it.
I just downloaded the updated Google maps app, so I can't imagine what else I would need. I really don't need more speed with anything.
Really, the only thing I am less than content with is that I no longer have a case that allows me to clip my phone to the visor in my car. :(
