Influenza Question

I just took my son to the dr and was told he has strep. He was complaining of a headache also so the tested for influenza and it also came back positive for influenza A. The dr said he shouldnt go back to school for a week. Does that sound right? I would have never guessed he even had this without the test. I guess this strain is more respiratory--no vomit or diarrhea. The highest his temp has been is 99, and I figured that was from the strep. Just curious if anybody else has gone through this yet and how long they kept their kids out of school. (I did try the school nurse today, but there is no school today)

What can I do next?

If your son has just strep, he could return to school after 24 hours of antibiotics. Since he also has Influenza A he definitely needs to stay out of school until it's been 24 hours without a fever and he's showing decreased signs of a cold (which unfortunately can be up to a week). Infuenza A is highly contagious and can be life-threatening to some kids (not to scare you).

With Strep you have to keep the kids out of school for 3 days if not more to make sure that they can't pass it along. When I had strep I was not aloud to go back to work for a week and as a kid I when I got it a few times I was not aloud back at school for a week.

With Influenza A (which I just got over) it took about a week to feel up to doing activities and I guess it is very contagious for 3 or more days.

My guess is that the dr just wants to contain both so your child does not pass it along. The flu is ex termly bad this year, I ended up in the hospital for a day and a half and was not aloud back to work for 3 days after that. I would follow dr orders but feel free to check with the school nurse if you want a second opinion.

Hi Leah,

Yes, that sounds about right. Strep is very contageus! He should be on antibiotics. Make sure he washes his hands alot. Be sure to clean everything, door knobs included. When my daughter had that she was out of school for a week. It is really hard to tell if one has strep because it affects everyone differently.

We have an oil that kills strep on contact. This strain of oil kills e-coli, staph, strep, yeast infections, salmonella, on contact. We also have the only EPA approved Botanical cleaner. Which means that your little ones will not get hurt if they touch it or even drink it. You should really check it out. If you have any questions: I do conduct presentions on-line Tuesday & Thursday evenings, Saturday mornings and afternoon. Please see our website: http://yourchoice.healthyhometour.com.

Good luck, hope this helps,

J.

Hi Leah
My son just went through the same thing. He was out of school for a week because influenza is so contagious. The school nurse said he can not return to school until he has not had a fever for 24hours and that took him about a week. Good luck I hope recovers soon and no one else in the family gets it.:) T.

Influenza is ALWAYS upper respitory! Sick atleast a week, fever, chills, body aches, cough, upper respitory, alot of people get hospitalized and even die.

Everyone confuses these two

Stomach Flu/Viruses is vomitting and diarreha usually lasts 24-72 hours. It is not the actual flu.

I would keep him home until he hasn't had a fever in atleast 24 hours, is running around like normal and eating normal.

My daughter had the flu(influenza) at age2 and slept 17 hours consecutively, and didn't get out of bed for 2 days. It did take her a good week to be back to normal. After that I've always gotten her a flu shot every October! Plus you don't want to send them back and spread the flu.

Keep him home. My kids had the flu and they each had it for over a week. THe other kids at daycare were exposed before my kids got it and they got it too. It was not fun. Even though he's not got a temp, he still can expose the other kids to it.

i had this flu and i stayed home from work for a week. that's how bad i felt. the headache was terrible and i had breathing issues, had to get a nebulizer. also had bronchitis on top of it. i would say keep her home to not get others sick, but this flu seems to not really have a window of being contagious. it seems to just keep on getting passed around. it's taken a month to go through my family and then the family that watches my son.
