ps a 4 month old doesnt need a vitamin
My 4 month old has been having small traces of blood in her stool. She is NOT fussy at all. The doctor says that it is a milk and soy allergy, and to cut out these products... but i have... and still we are having blood in her stool... all i eat is meat and vegs... does anyone know what could be happening now. the only thing i can think that could cause this is the vitamins supp. she takes ...oh by the way she is breastfed.

Hi E.,
Blood in the stool is not from an allergy. And vitamins will not cause this. Vitamin supplements shouldn't cause this unless they are drug store grade and have a product in them as a filler that her tummy can't handle. Double check what you are giving her. (I had this as a child and it was not til I was over 40 did I, yes me, figure it out....)
Not to be gross but what color is the blood? That will tell you where it is coming from. There is definitely an irritation or a condition that needs to be cleared up now and not just put off as allergy. Are her bowels functioning regularly?..(A movement after each meal.)Is she constipated? Sometimes pushing and straining can cause bleeding AT the rectum which would show as small traces. Milk can constipate.
Cow's milk does leave a residue in the colon that can irritate an irritation that is already there but it won't cause her to bleed. The chemicals in the processing of the milk can be a problem but generally do not have visible signs this early.
You need to find a doctor/naturopath that is familiar with this. and you need to ASK every question you can to get to the bottom of this. Search diligently because the first thing most docs do is medicate and medications can cause so many other problems. And in my case kept me bleeding for years......
God bless,
M.
How long has it been since you cut out milk and soy? It can take a few weeks, perhaps even several weeks, for it to totally clear out of your system and your breastmilk. But a second opinion might be warranted.
There are so many things that could be the cause. Super fast/hard let down (believe it or not)can cause this. Introduction of vitamin could do this. Go to babycenter.com and go to symptoms and type in your problem. We had same issue twice and it just went away. Good luck!

My niece bled with her stools too as a baby and they told her mom it was a milk allergy so they put her on soy. It still happened and they found out she was just getting too much iron. in a few days with a new diet, it cleared up and she stayed on the diet a couple of months. She is 7 now and never had another problem with milk. She drinks it all the time.
I would get a second opinion. See if you can get them to send you to a Pediatric Gastroenterologist. My son had issues with milk but not the blood and we were told if he didn't get better to see one. He thankfully seems to be outgrowing it as he gets closer to a year old.
A close friend of mine is dealing with the same thing with her 5 month old. She has cut milk/dairy and soy out of her diet completely for months, and he still occassionally has blood in his stool. Her ped. also told her it was "normal", but she asked for a referral to a pediatric gastro. He won't be able to be seen until January, so if you are really concerned, you may want to ask for the referral now. Hope this helps!
Have you drank any unpasteurized cows milk? or ate feta cheese or any other unpasteurized cheese? When breastfeeding these are bad for the baby and can cause blood in the baby's stool.
Hi E., I am not a dr. but my husband and I are very health conscious for the whole family. I am a home manager with 4 children and I breast fed (still breast feeding one)all of our children. Sometimes the case can be us (mommies)and our diet, since they receive our nutrients intake thru our milk. I had to change my whole diet to a better diet and it cut out a lot of issues with each one of our children. Here is a website you can go to to read up on a healthier life for you & your family. www.joshaxe.com. He is a local radio health dr in brentwood tn and has a health facility called Exodus in brentwood tn. You can also speak to him in person at his business or call him about what's going on. My whole family is on coconut milk which he recommends is the best milk. I have seen a dramatic change in our skin, colons, energy levels, etc... We used to be on soy milk but after he talked about the estrogen in the milk, we immediately changed. I hope this helps. There is more but please call and talk to him, we listen to him just about every day. You just have to be consistent and I pray and hope all goes well. Have a good day E..

It can take 2-4 weeks for the milk protein to leave your body and another couple before it is completely out of hers. So unless you've been doing this for 6-8 weeks I wouldn't completely write it off.
If you have been then I'd go ahead and knock out the other high allergy foods. Peanuts, gluten, and one other that is completely escaping me right now.
Good luck!
My daughter also had the same thing; blood in the stool and she would cry like she had cramps in her stomach. It turned out that she couldn't digest the protein in my breastmilk (protein allergy). She had to be switched to Alimentum (where the protein is broken down into small chains of amino acids) which she also couldn't digest. We finally ended up on a prescription formula where the protein was broken down into single amino acids. Then we slowly went back to Alimentum and then gradually to whole milk.
She is 9 years old today and has never had any other food allergy issues so don't worry even though it's frustrating when you're going through it! If your pediatrician can't or won't help, try seeing a pediatric gastroenterologist. Good luck! Keep us updated!
Yes, like one mom said it can take even several Months to clear completely out of your system. Also, a lot of food products have soy or whey added to them and you really have to read the ingredients.
I've personally never heard of a dairy allergy causing bleeding. I would definatley get another opinion.
My son had this and it was a small fissure that healed on it's own. There are many other symptoms to milk allergies and I'm surprised your doctor immediately told you to eliminate milk. Well, actually, I'm not. I had a pediatrician tell me to eliminate caffiene to help with spitting up (it doesn't). I was quite annoyed, after all, HE'S not feeding an infant around the clock! I would wait and see if it clears up in week or so, as long as it is still just a small amount of blood.
