Indoor Herb Garden?

Hi mama-

I have rarely had luck with indoor herbs...but even here in VA I have success with them the better part of the year on our deck...both in large pots...and window boxes. They get good sun most of the day...and I water A LOT!

I have big gallon size containers of 3 different basils...all growing like WEEDS (we are big tomato and basil eaters...)

Chives are doing well...and 'return' each year. I have mint, that also 'returns' and has taken over the window box... (I never have enough bourbon to keep 'juleps' on hand...but is nice as/in tea...and makes a fragrant garnish!)

I also have thyme and oregano...both 'hang down' from the window box. I also have rosemary...with mixed successes bring that in thru winter...

I did basil, rosemary, thyme, cilantro and chocolate mint. I had them on a table in front of a huge sunny window. They thrived. But, another time i had an herb garden and we didn't have a lot of natural sunlight, so they died. It's all about the location and pruning them before the seed (the basil and cilantro)! Also, mint needs it's own pot other wise the roots will smother the other plants roots. I had chives too, but they didn't do so well.

I have done indoor herb gardens for the last few winters. A long skinny planter is best because it will fit on a windowsill. You mention putting yours under the cabinets next to the backsplash. That's good only if it's directly under a window. Your herbs will need all the winter sunlight they can get... Shining directly on them. And yes, you can put all your herbs in one planter. I usually have basil, cilantro, thyme, dill and parsley.

I am a great gardener but I can never get an indoor herb garden to take off. Right now my herb garden outside is out of control, they look like bushes. It is just too hard to recreate the environment they enjoy. One day I will get my greenhouse and I will have my herbs year round. :)
