I'm a sahm with three children and have the opportunity to watch a five month old a few days a week. I'd have the baby close to 10 hours per day along with my 3 year old daughter in my home. My older two would be in school during the majority of that time. What is the going rate per day for infant care. When my younger son was in daycare we paid $42/day. I was thinking of asking for $50 or $5 per hour. Is that reasonable?

They seem totally fine with the rate I quoted. They are paying for convenience and not having to put her in a daycare facility with several other children. I also have to factor in the cost of gas as I drive to pick her up and take her back to my home(8 miles round trip). I do have Early Childhood education, CPR and first aid along with 10+ years experience with raising my own children. I am also a certified caregiver with 10+ years experience. I just was curious about rates and wanted to make sure I was being fair.

If you are on a set schedule, I think that's fine! If it is going to vary, I'd charge a flat rate per week. I'd probably actually do that anyways, it would be easier for you to budget things. Infant care in MD runs about $200 a week for in-home care and up to $400 a week for a center. So it really depends on what you are going to provide.
What you are really looking to arrange is a nannyshare, where you are the 'nanny' and your child is one of the children. In Seattle, nannyshare rates can range from $13-20 per hour (so half that per family.) Additional costs may be included on top of that: gas, snacks, food, CPR classes etc. Those additional costs are split among each family. Make sure to write everything up! What happens when it snows and all of your kids are home for the day? What happens if you are sick or the baby is sick? What happens if the parents are late to pick up the baby? What if they go on vacation or keep the baby home? do they still pay you? Be sure to discuss this before it happens, so everyone knows what to expect when things get stressful.
it is the whole cost/worth situation. normal daily rates in my area are $25/day but that is for a person running a day care out of her home with a few clients. For it to be worth it to me to watch someone else's child I would have to be getting $40-50/day. What is it worth to the other person? What is it worth to them to be with you based on what you offer, 2 on 1 in your home, etc? for me personally it would not be worth MY time to watch someone 3x a week for a total of $75. Double that and we would talk.
Where I live, the cost for infant care is about $30/day.

I'm in the Los Angeles area and paying $35/day for in-home care (daughter is 13 months). This facility has about half a dozen other kids, so I'm not sure if that impacts the price...Anyhow, good luck negotiating! Sounds like a good opportunity for income.

I am reading this to say $50 per day. If that is not correct and you mean $50 for all 3 days then disregard the note.
If this person was to put him in a fully licensed child care center she would pay less, less money per day for a fully trained, CDA certified, CPR/First aid certified, educated in early childhood development with possibly even a college degree, with years of professional experience teacher. So for a SAHM who is not a licensed facility I would expect to pay about half of what a fully licensed child care center would charge.
For part time care that is over 4 hours they would charge her for a full day but that would still be less than what you're asking for part time care.

She would pay about $15.50 per day for full time care for an infant in a 1 STAR facility or $14.50 for a home child care or $72.50 for a full time place 5 full length days.
For a 1+ STAR facility she would pay $18.25-$21.25, depends on what county it is in and if it's rural or a big city. In a child care home she would pay $17.25-$19.25.
In a 2 STAR rated child care center she would pay $24-$30 and in a child care home it would run $20-$25.75.
For a 3 STAR rated facility, the highest rating in Oklahoma, she would pay $35 for a center and $27.75 in a child care home or $138.75 for full 5 days of full time care, over 50 hours of care.
Full time child care is often over 11 hours per day. The parents drop the child off before work around 7:15 am then don't get off work until 5-5:30. By the time they drive through rush hour traffic it is often nearly 6pm before the kids get picked up. So almost always it's a 11 hour day for those kids.

Not to be mean but I don't think anyone who is not licensed should get paid more than someone who has "paid their dues" in their career and works hard for minimum wage or just above. I think that since you're not in this field of professional work that you are not due to be paid the same or better than someone who is a professional.
Of course you have a lot to offer this mom and child but $10 per hour is way too much for babysitting.
Check other providers as it's totally a regional thing. Where I live, $50 a day would be a bargain, especially for a day that long, especially an infant. Five or 10 years ago the going rate for infants for 7-9 hours a day at a daycare center was $60+ per day, more for longer hours. So $1200 a month for infant care was/is the norm around here. When my last child "graduated" from day care 2 years ago I was paying $55 a day for 8 hours for a 5 year old, but we were only a few days a week. Pricing usually decreases the older the children get.
I've never paid more than 40/day (although our costs were always weekly not daily), but that was in Missouri.
i live in Seattle and pay approx. 80 a day to put my infant in DAYCARE. Highschoolers ask 8-10 an hour to babysit only my non-infant. Things vary by neighborhood, qualifications and the situation, but your qualifications sound good. That seems more than reasonable. If you look at what people want on SitterCity and other sites, i think you will find very few who would not be asking for significantly more.
i would also recommend you get a basic contract defining your (and their) expectations.

Wow $50 a day would be $250 a week and $1000.00 a month...that seems really steep to me. Guess that is why I decided to stay home with my DD. At that rate I wouldn't have had an option unless I was working JUST to pay for daycare.
I don't know seattle prices but I can tell you that infant care in my area is more in the $70 to $80 a day range for the kind of hours you have asked about. so yes $50 for a 10 hour day is fair. People are giving you the cost for their weekly care but any daycare facility will charge more for part time than they do for full time if your going on a per day. When I did at home daycare I charged $150 per week for 1 child. or I charged $60 a day for individual days.

Totally depends on your area. The going rate here is anywhere from $175 to $200 a week here for full time infant care. Just make sure you have a set schedule so you don't have the parents dropping her off too early or picking up later than you expected.
