Last Friday I took my son in for his immunizations and since then he won't nap or sleep well. Regularly he sleeps two naps a day and then sleeps at night from 10pm to 4am and then feeds then sleeps till 7am. On Friday he slept his two naps but since then it's been pulling teeth to get him down and bedtime...let's just say no one in the house is getting any sleep. Any help would be great. I don't know if this is all due to the shots or what....Help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to say thank you all for your advice and support. We followed through with some and now we are happily back on track. After thinking back to last week I realized that my son was taking on two to three more feedings a day so I think our sleep issue may have been linked to his growth spurt.. Thanks again everyone. HAPPY FRIDAY.

It is normal for babies to go through changes with their sleep cycles. I don't think it's connected to immunizations at all.

Do your truly believe this has to do with him being immunized??? I don't.
It is purely coicidence. Believe me there are people on here that are anti vaccination and will totally jump on that it is to blame, however, babies change sleep habits.. a lot! Maybe his afternoon nap is too long for him, make a snuggly bedtime routine and make sure his tummy is full. If he had a growth spurt then that can cause them to want to eat more, or right now at 4 mos he very well could be teething.
I assure you, you are very great in vaccinating your baby!! YEAH FOR YOU! If you are really worried it is associated with the vaccine then call your Pediatrician. Please do NOT give him any homeopathic remedy or herbal supplements without first talking to your DR, none of that has been tested on children and can be dangerous!!
Both of my kids had their full rounds of shots and neither changed sleeping habits due to shots, teething, growth spurts they did however.

Personally, I doubt it has anything to do with the shots. Side effects typically (at least in my experience are only a day or two). It is likely a coincidence. I would check out some sleep books to get a sense of the number of hours he needs. He may need to go down earlier and is overtired and having a harder time going to sleep. He could be going through a growth spurt or some big developmental milestone, all which may cause sleep issues. My absolute favorite book for sleep information (not so great for the how to) is Health Sleep Habits, Healthy Baby. It will give you typical # of hours, how many naps at what age etc. I can't recall when my son went to 2 naps, although it seems later than 4 months. But also I struggled with sleep for a long time but I was adamant that we figure it out. Now he no longer naps and sleeps at least 12 hours straight .. he's almost four.

Good luck

I agree with Katie D---I would try the Tylenol. It's possible he could be a little sore from the vaccines but each day with diminished soreness. Growth spurts are very common at 4 months and the other thing that you can never predict is teething issues. Even though teeth may not erupt for months there are times when the teeth are moving and make babies very uncomfortable---another reason to give the Tylenol a try. Also warm soothing baths just prior to bedtime will help with soreness at the vaccine sites.

If no relief then I would call your pediatrician for insight.

Best wishes.

Dear K.,
You need to consult with your Dr. regarding any change after having immunizations. Also reconsider the next round of shots- when and if you have them given.
As already recommended, "Rescue Remedy" is a homeopathic, found at your local Health Food Store and it very valuable. If you continue to have problems, you should have him seen by a Naturopath Physician.

When you have problems that may be related to shots the recommendation is to wait until your children are older and in very good health, IF you are going to give them shots.
It is best to study the information that is available currently on vaccinations.

I have nine children and I gave all my older children shots on schedule until I had three very sick little boys with little resistance to anything after having their immunizations.

I decided to wait to give my younger children their "shots". My 6th child had her shots at age 12, next girl @ 10, next girl @ 9 and then my son. The girls did fine. I wish I would have waited on my youngest son though he was 6 years old! I finally gave immunizations to my youngest. After his immunizations he had a nagging cough off and on for 18 months, without any cold symptoms. He's eight now and he finally has better immunities, like he did before his "shots".

Just want to encourage you to read as much as you can.

It could be related to the shots. My kids were always a little grouchy and uncomfortable for a few days after getting immunizations. Have you given him any Tylenol (he's not old enough for ibuprophen)? If you haven't, I suggest giving him some about 30 minutes before bedtime. (It's always best to dose by weight, not age. Call a pharmacist or your doctor if your not sure of the amount.)

Also, is he learning a new skill? (Rolling over for example.) A lot of kids have trouble sleeping when they are excited to be practicing a new found skill.

Lastly, it could just be a growth spurt. (Is he eating a lot more than usual?) My kids always had trouble staying on schedule when they'd reach a growth spurt. After a few days, things would go back to normal. My daughter hit a growth spurt at 5-months and then didn't sleep through the night again until she was 10-months old.

If it continues more than a week or so, you might want to take him to the doctor just to rule out any other issues or illnesses.

If it does not improve I would stay away from any shots until you figure out what is going on. If it is a reaction to something in the immunization then it will only continue to have more effects each time. There are so many things that they put in shots now. You could try NAET.com and see if it is a reaction to heavy metals(aluminum) or formaldihide or egg protiens just to start.

K.,
I'll tell you what my twins haven't slept through the night sinse their 3 month shots either, and I am not happy about it because they are now going on 16 moths, I don't know what they put in those 3 month ones but I feel very sorry for my children now,I don't know why they have to give so many at a time to a body trying to adapt to a cruel world anyway why can't two of the shots wait two mor months and only give them 2 every 3 months and hav it all done before 3.
THEY used to be such amazingly scheduled sleepers, it was awesome now I AM miserable.
I believe in immunisations but not that many at one time.

Hi K.. i'm a little confused as to how you sent me an e-mail. do i know you?? i would say your son's problems could be due to the shots, but with him being only 4 months old don't hesitate to call your dr if you think something's wrong. is the only problem him not sleeping?? cause it could also just be a growth spurt that he's going through. it seems their sleeping and eating usually get a little wierd around those times. he could have also picked up some kind of bug when you guys were at the dr's. there's a lot of stuff going around town right now.
