I was just diagnosed with a significant case of IBS yesterday. I have been suffering for years but it’s gotten very bad the last 6 months have now been put on a prescription for it. I know a high fiber diet is essential but I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions for things that they’ve done that have really helped it. I’m open to anything/herbal/homeopathic/brands of products that you like/etc. And if you’re on a prescription, please let me know what it is and if you like it. Sounds like there are a lot of them out there for IBS and it may be a work in progress to find the right one. I’ve already added in fiber capsules and will be taking them with every meal and will be going on a high potency probiotic. But is there anything else you’ve done that’s helped? I’m open to hearing anything. I am just so sick of living with this. Not to give TMI but I never know if I’m going to be running to the bathroom or miserable because I haven’t gone to the bathroom in a week. It’s awful. I appreciate your suggestions!

So What Happened?

I started the meds and in combo with lots of fiber, I'm feeling pretty well. My stomach isn't hurting as much and hopefully it continues to improve. I appreciate the feedback! Thanks!

Hi i know what you are going through. I have suffered from the same thing for years, and it runs in my family. My father and my brother both have it too. IBS is no fun and different meds work different for everyone but we all take ranitidine (generic for zantac) daily and it keeps from having the awful attacks, and on days that are really bad we all take dicyclomine. Although that one seems to clean you out and have you in the bathroom alot more. You can get the ranitidine at kmart and walmart over the counter instead of presciption, some places it turns out to be cheaper than getting it through the pharmacy. Hope this helps and that you find some relief. Good luck. P.s. Also i have found for myself that spicy foods, eggs, and too much carbonation are triggers for me that make my IBS worse. Pay attention to what you eat and you will find the foods that make it worse for you.

I have been dealing with this for years! I have tried many medications and diet changes and fiber and probiotics. Nothing has helped. The last medication I tried was Xifaxin. It worked for a while but then stopped working. I am taking Effexor now, it is an antidepressant that has been tested for use with IBS patients. It regulates the seratonin in your brain and gut to regulate your intestinal track. I have been on it for a few months and it seems to be working. I have had a few problems but they are less severe and when I do have issues I take Dicyclomine and that helps stop it. I know your pain and frustration very well. I don't know what doctor you see but that makes a big difference. I see Dr. Muska, he's out of St. Alexiusin Hoffman Estates. Let me know if you want his info. Feel free to write me with any questions you have, I feel like I'm almost an expert with all the research I've done!
Good luck!

IBS is often misdiagnosed, when it really may be Celiac Disease. When you get the right answers, you may not need medication. I wrote an article about it here: http://www.examiner.com/x-7158-Chicago-Family-Health-Exam... Click on the IBS hyperlink to get the medical study, I think you may have answers.

If you decide you want to get tested for Celiac Disease the University of Chicago does a free blood test each year to see if one has Celiac Disease. Their phone screenings begin on Sept. 1, University of Chicago's info is in the same article. The medical study says to get tested. I have known a half dozen to get misdiagnosed...

I am so sorry to hear about this and how it must make you feel. Can't feel comfortable any time, right? Well, I have had many people use similar products but this fiber additive is colorless and tasteless and it has made night and day difference for so many people.

I also highly recommend detoxing to get rid of the bad things that may be in your colon that are literally stored there unless treated. I use an exceptional 100% organic probiotic that has the most strains of bacteria to get your body back to where it is supposed to be. All of these products are natural and have 100% money back guarantee. It is so frustrating to keep trying things that don't work and you've spent your hard earned money on them.

I'd be more than happy to help you out and provide more information so that you can make an educated decision. Let me know how I can help you!

Here's to your health,

My husband suffers with IBS and has found great results with Align and also Now probiotics, 8 billion acidophilus bifidus. We both also take about a teaspoon of Inulin Now brand in a glass of water after our dinner and find that it helps keep us regular. Inulin is natural, it's just chicory root. You may want to start with 1/2 teaspoon and work up to a teaspoon. Also avoid high fructose corn syrup which is in everything and look for organic foods. Of course lots of fruit and veggies, lean meat, avoid fast food and too much alcohol. Good luck!

Have you tried digestive enzymes? The probiotics should make a big difference too. I was told by my doctor that there is a mental component to IBS - are you under a lot of stress?
