I suffer from IBS and being in the 1st trimester of pregnancy it is taking a toll on my system. I would like a non-perscription option to lessen some of these symptoms and boost energy.

What can I do next?

I have IBS as well. I have never however had to resort to anything prescription yet. Just have to make sure you have a high fiber diet..and whats worked so far for me is daily metamucil. Sounds odd but it does work. IBS is exceptionally painful i know ! ive had it since 1989. I make sure i have high fiber foods on hand, nuts are a good source, broccoli, etc.
hope that helps..if not im sorry! ive just never had to treat my IBS even while pregnant with anything prescription.
hugs and bless that little one!

hello there
i suffer from ulcerative colitis which i only developed after the birth of my son. it has been very challenging and i know sufferers with IBS can encounter many of the same issues.
look into the specific carb diet. it has helped thousands of people who have issues like we do. it is very hard, and not a very fun diet. but if you are really suffering you will be willing to try anything. it is balanced and you will be able to get everything you need for pregnancy and also breastfeeding if you plan to do that.
like one other person mentioned, the diet incorporates yogurt (a homemade one with very low lactose content).

it is worth a try. but with ibs you really have to listen to your body and see what works.

have you seen a specialist? my general dr told me IBS but the specialist he referred me to did a much more complete exam and found colitis which is treated in a very different way. and you have probably ruled out things like parasites or bacterial infection...

definitely try probiotics (there are many different kinds) and also try digestive enzymes. these things work for many people and are safe for pregnancy.

feel free to contact me if you want any more detailed info. i have lots!

hope you feel better soon!!

Are you 100% positive that you have IBS?? I ask you that only because that's what I thought I had until I had some tests done at by a gastroenterologist. The results came back that I have what's called Celiac Sprue - gluten/wheat food allergy. I have had stomach aches and pains my entire life, and really only came out after my son was born. If you know for sure that you have IBS, I don't really know what to tell you other than just watch and record what you eat and see if there is any corrilation between what you eat and how you feel. But if you're not sure, go to a GI doctor and find out for sure that's what it is/isn't. If it's Celiac, you just change your diet and you'll feel better (easier said than done, believe me!) Good luck. Let me know how it goes!

I really feel for you. From what I know about IBS you can control this with diet a little. Have you ever heard of Juice Plus? I have had two friends with IBS who have started tacking this and it has helped them a whole lot. Anyway its a really simple way to get the variety of 17 different fruits and vegtables into your diet, there is loads of research done on it (including the awesome benefits it has on pregnant women). You can go to www.juiceplus.com and read about it if you would like. I also have the info on the study they did with pregnancy on it if you are interested. Please email me and let me know what you think and if you want that info on pregnancy. my email is ____@____.com.

I too have IBS and when I was pregnant with my son it was hard in the begining few months then it actualy got better and didn't have any problems untill after he was born. If you are haveing an ssue with constibation I sugest peaches. My dr said if it starts with a p it will help you pass things. If your issue is going too often try banannas, Remember the frase p is for pass b is for block. this is for furit at least. Also ask your doctor and they might have some other ideas of foods or natural medications like a pecific combination of herbs that may help. I have heard green tea helps too.

My sister has IBS and she has had a lot of trouble with it. I second the yougurt. I read in a magazine that yougurt is supposed to help so I told her about it. She tried it and has had success with it. And she has been on just about every medication for IBS with minimal success. Good luck, I know IBS is awful from watching my sister suffer with it.

Have you tried eating yogurt everyday? A friend of mine has had IBS for about 6 years. About 3 years ago he had a doctor tell him to eat yogurt everyday because of the live and active cultures in it. (His other doctor advised against diary b/c it can trigger symptoms.) It wasn't/isn't a cure, but it helped him. I also learned in a nutrition class that yogurt contains good bacteria called probiotics and can help with digestion problems.

Good Luck!

Hi there. I would very much suggest going to see a Chiropractor who does nutrition as well. I wouldn't want to be taking a prescription either, and he might be able to help you with enzymes or something.
I had been taking Prevacid or Zantac for acid reflux for over 10 years when I got pregnant with my twins, my Chiropractor hubby started me on some pro-biotics and enzymes to get my tummy taken care of- wasn't crazy about the idea at the time, but would you believe that since I finished that routine when I was 7 months pregnant, the babies are now 13 mopnths old, and I haven't had ANY heartburn or acid reflux since.
Thought maybe there might be some pro-biotics and enzymes for IBS that might help you, at least throughout pregnancy and nursing. If not, he might have better suggestions for you! GL!

The best things for IBS are to eat a diet very high in fiber and to avoid foods that irritate the condition. Drink a lot of water to keep you digestive tract going.

But some patients experience bad occurences with the disorder in relation to stress.

Foods to avoid:
food with medium to large seeds
popcorn

everyone is different so you have to identify what foods or conditions trigger your IBS and avoid those situations and foods. It may be trial and error if this is a new diagnosis for you but keep listening to your body and you will learn how to tame the IBS.
