My question is-does anyone put their babies on their bellies to sleep? I know it is a big no no, but we put our 2 month old on his belly to play a bit everyday and today he fell asleep on the floor and we were right next to him the whole time and he was so settled. He stayed there for 2 hrs-and he can lift his head and move it back and forth. Thx. L.

What can I do next?

My son hated sleeping on his back. He slept on his tummy and the difference was amazing. I didn't have any blankets, toys, pillows, or bumper in the crib until he was able to roll over on each side well and I never had any problems with him sleeping on his tummy.

All four of my kids slept on their stomach. My older two it was recommended so they didn't choke to death when they spit up. With my younger two it was the ol back to sleep. Well my kids don't sleep well on their back so I let them sleep on their stomach. Happy to say they are all alive.

My son always slept better on his belly. At night in his crib, I would put him on his back. I made sure to swaddle him, when he was on his back. During the day when I was right there, I put him on his belly. He started rolling over pretty early, so I just let him sleep however he wanted at that time.

My babies always slept on their belly. Most children I've been around sleep best that way. I've never listened to drs. Trust your mommy intuition, and do what works best for you and your baby.

L., I put my first child on his side until he was older and wanted to be on his back. (That was when I moved him to the big crib from the bassinet.) However, my younger son couldn't settle on his side or back. He was miserable. I talked to the ped about it and she told me to try his stomach. She explained that some babies just don't sleep well unless they are on their stomachs. She also reminded me that millions of people lived after sleeping on their stomachs before doctors said not to do it. She is right. I put him on his stomach and it was like magic.

What is important is to go by the rest of the SIDS guidelines. No toys, pillows, etc in the crib. A sleep sack instead of blanket is a good idea. Don't have the room too warm either.

My ds started rolling over from back to tummy at about 2 1/2 months old. After that whenever I laid him down he would struggle and wiggle all over arching his back until he managed to flop over on his tummy, then he would go to sleep. After a few times of this, I just started laying him down that way. We would make a joke that someone better call the SIDS police. I talked to our doctor about it, he said if hes old enough to get himself that way, hes old enough to sleep that way.

My daughter did this with all her kids and most of my friends do that all the time. The baby was inside you for a long time so laying on your tummy allows them to feel and hear the heart beat and warmth.

So it's a pretty normal place for them to sleep.

Yes! Our daughter could lift and turn her head at a few weeks. She actually did it when she was just born..

I noticed at 4 to 6 weeks, she was rolling to her tummy, Asked the doctor and he said go for it.. Laying her on her tummy,,, This is when she started sleeping through the night..

I think if you are right there with him it's totally fine, but sorry I am a big believer in the "back to sleep" system otherwise! I know plenty of people have stories of how sleeping on tummies worked for their kids, and that is fine, but generally speaking it is safer and there has been a lot of research on it.

Tummy time is good for them though and it helps strengthen those muscles. In a few months when he can roll on his own it will be safer for him to sleep on his stomach without being watched so carefully.

I think most people were saying that since it happened once and you were right there, it was ok. It is still MUCH riskier to put your baby to sleep on his tummy. Please look at the change in SIDS incidence since the back to sleep campaign started. Some people will tell you SIDS was dropping anyway, but it has not fallen in communities that still have a high rate of tummy sleeping. Tummy time is important for muscular development, but it is supervised tummy time. And of course most babies who are put to sleep on their tummies are fine. But some of them DIE.
