I want to potty train my son, since he is 2. He as shown a huge interest in the bathroom, and especially the potty. He has his own potty that sits in the bathroom, and he likes to sit on it he just doesn't go in it. I am having a very hard time, timing it just right to take him to the potty so that he will go in it. I don't want him to feel like being potty trained is a frustrating thing. Althogh it has been hard for my husband and me to find the right method for us. I do know that there are several ways to potty train a child, and what may work well for one child may not work for our son. If there is anyone willing to share their potty training experiences with me and give suggestions that would be great.

Thank you in advance.

What can I do next?

First you need to make sure he's truly ready (and an interest in using the potty is a HUGE start!)
Signs of readiness:

We used the Dr. Phil "potty train your child in one day" (after months of agony, frustration and many, many accidents) and it worked (in about a week to be mostly accident free). Many moms suggested this to me and I was shocked when it worked.

Good luck!

Well, you're right, potty training is different for everyone. The best advice is to be patient with it and don't give up after you have started. We started potty training our son when he was 2. He has been fully potty trained now for about 6 months, he is 3 and a half now. We started with the little potty and gave him a sticker to put on his potty every time he went in it. That worked for a while but he eventually lost interest in that. Finally we just started him in underwear all the time and brought extra clothes with us everywhere. That is what worked the best for us. He really got the concept when he was no longer wearing a diaper/pull-up. He still has accidents from time to time. The entire process can be frustrating at times but you just have to stick w/ it and reward your child every time they go in the potty.

My you have your hands full. I am actually 52 and from what I remember when they do finially go in the potty make a real big thing out of it. Praise him alot and be very excited. I actually tryed putting my sons hand in some warm water as they say that makes you go. I would suggest not trying to make him stand up and go like most men do and I wished I had trained my sons to sit and go. The reason I'm saying this is when I got married the last time to my husband of 20 years I noticed one day that he never stood up to go. His mom and dad didn't teach him the guy way. And it the future it really helps as far as not having to clean up the mess that young boys can make around the toilet. That has been a wonderful thing not to have to deal with.
I hope with my advice and others you will find what's best for your son. I do have a question if you don't mind writing me back and letting me know as I am curious. What does SAHM mean? My email address is ____@____.com me know and God bless you and yours. C.

I found that my kids prefered to use the big potty just like mom and dad use. We would sit them backwards on the seat, that way they would not fall in and it made them spread the legs so they could see what was happening as well it would not get their legs wet. My 2 yr old was trained that way and now has wanted to be a big girl and turned around facing the right way. It may seem gross to let them watch themselves going both 1 & 2, but it really helps. Trained 3 that way. Good luck to you, and hopefully it will get easier w/each one. My last one almost trained herself by watching the older 2.

To get my daughter used to going in the potty I would put it in the livingroom with us and have her sit on it while she was watching cartoons or a movie. After a few times of sitting on it she went pee in it and was so excited and we did a big dance and gave her a reward that she wanted to do it all the time. I think that she just needed to see it in the potty for it to click. :) Good luck to your son!

Hi there
What I did with both my kids was make it a routine time to go to the potty. Usually every 20 minutes or so. If they sat on the potty they got some sort of treat(doesnt have to be candy). good luck

Hi im also potty training my son. He is 2 almost 3. I started with him as soon as he was 2 and soon found out that he really wasnt ready yet. I would put him on the potty and nothing would happen. So i kinda backed off of it for awhile. Now he is doing great at it and he really understands whats going on down there. So just give you son some time he may not be ready yet.
