Hi ladies, My son is graduating from high school this year. We will be having an outdoor party to celebrate in July. I was just wondering if anyone has any fun, affordable ideas for the party. It will be the first time my son will have both sides of his family together to celebrate. We do have a pool. Got any good ideas for food or fun?
Thanks for your time!
R.

My only advice is get it catered if you can -there are very reasonable drop of catering packages available - that way you can enjoy the celebration along with everyone else.

Congratulations

Cornhole is a fun game that people get addicted to: http://www.cornholeoutlet.com/ We spent half of our vacation on the OBX playing it on the beach! If you or your husband have some carpentry skills, you can make the board yourself and just buy the beanbags... have fun!

Hi,
I am having the same problem. My oldest is also graduating in 3 weeks!!
The only place for me to have her party is at my parents. They have a nice piece of property, with a pond. So, we have fishing and swimming to include in activities. I bought an all - in - one sports set at walmart a couple years ago, but I got the cheapest one and it didn't last long. I will be buying another one this year, but a better one. This comes with a net for volleyball, badmitton, tennis.
My parents have a family reunion every so often (usually in August) and the last was 2 years ago and only my dad's side of the family came. Now with a graduation, he wants to plan another family party, but include more of the family (my older siblings [not his], their kids, and my cousins and of course my daughter's friends.
I cant imagine teenagers wanting to participate in games unless it is of their choosing. The family parties I went to when I was young usually consisted of a pig roasted in the ground, football, and volleyball. It was great!!
good luck

You could hang a few pinata's as a gag, put some candy in ONE,( for the little kids)

money, phone cards, emergency numbers,GC to walmart in another, and perhaps Condoms, playing cards, deodorant, vitamins, benedryl, cough syrup etc in the last.

( Don't know what your family is like, and if they'd think it was funny)

But everyone likes candy,

and he could definately use the money for school,( pennies for the pinata for the little kids, with a special baggie of cash labeled for him,)

And since he is probably going to college him and his friends would definately laugh at the condoms while it also reminds them to be responsible.
And the other items are just useful for any kid going to college.Which of course would be strickly for the teenagers.

Have the directions for several games to play with the playing cards, and some kiddie prizes ,crowns, bubbles, fake cigars, and real ones for adults, FAKE tatoos,

Basically kiddie party gifts AS a GAG
Maybe some gangster hats, and Tshirts if you can afford it that say something funny

Oh how exciting! I just attended HS graduation yesterday and it made me so sad to think it's been so long since I was in their shoes! :(

Anyway, if you have quite a few people coming and the extra funds, I would have it catered, do potluck, or get food from somewhere. I am not a good food-planner so I'm always taking the easy route in that aspect! :) Also I would suggest hiring a DJ to play some music for a few hours. I know some of our neighbors have done that in the past for their HS graduates.

Have fun and enjoy!

if he's going to college I would say a Bon Voyage party would be cute or put the theme around the school itself...school colors and clothes, survival kit for college....make a game out of how to do laundry(if he doesn't know...sorting/instruction cards )I like the idea of the calling cards as for food...you could order pizza and soda as a reference to the "freshman diet"(you could make up a menu ...)or you could make a banner that says FINALLY and hand the kid a suitcase as a joke...or on a more sentimental note...pull out all those art projects and school pictures from over the years and put them on display...all in all though whatever you do it's the graduation that matters not the party so much....

Keep it simple!!!! Potluck is best if possible!!! It will be more fun for you and everyone if you keep it to easily prepared foods or stuff that can be done ahead of time. BBQ some burgers and dogs, make ziti ahead, have some different salads, chips and ice tea and water available. We have a big BBQ every summer that lasts all day. We have upward of 60 -70 people. Everyone brings something to share and we provide Burgers, dogs, rolls and giant containers of ice tea, lemonade and water plus the plates, cups and stuff like that. We feed everyone lunch and most hang out until dinner and beyond. It is a wonderful day and not a ton of work on us. A.
