What I did was call the builders and ask who they use and what the price is. I then went in person and said "Builder x said he gets all his carpet here and I am interested in the that deal." I could not believe I saved half.
So, we've been saving for quite some time to finish our basement. I'm trying to find a place that sells carpet at a reasonable price. Where do you recommend?
Note this is for about 800 square feet (so remnants will be too small). I'd like decent padding too, which I know costs more...
Thanks in advance!

We got ours at home depot. We ended up getting the end of the roll. Because of that we carpeted our basement for about $300. It was awesome. We did not have their people install it (there were no deals at the time) We hired an independant person and that saved us some money too.

We bought ours from an on-line warehouse in GA - soooooo much cheaper than a carpet store! Shipping was expensive but it was definitely worth it. I can't remember off the top of my head which company we went through (there are many of them) but if you really want to know, send me a message and I'll look up the info. for you. :)
We got ours at Lowes. The least expensive one is about $.88 per sq. foot. It's not bad either. They do have some other options for a bit more. My friend put the indoor/outdoor green carpet in her daughter's room and it is the softest most comfy carpet ever. It was very minimal.
You might try some home builders businesses and see what they offer.
