I need to meet people in my area. My life has been a whirl wind for the last few years and after a rough break up and a recent move to take care of my father I have realized I have no friends. I get along with people well but I don't know a soul in this town. Any ideas how to meet people? I'm broke taking care of an ailing parent and being a single mother so anything expensive is out of the question but I'm only 25 I can't live like a shut in any longer!!
Check out meetup.com to see if there are groups in your area - it's a site where you can find people with similar interests. You can also start your own group if you don't find one that works for you. If you're near a community college or if your city has a recreation center, sometimes they have very inexpensive classes. When I didn't have many friends, I started a mom's group at my church. I met so many wonderful women and have made the type of friends that last a lifetime. You could see if your area has a local MOPS group or other mom's groups.
What area do you live in? I love my MOPS group, and there is probably one in your area. Most have some kind of registration fee, but most will also help you with that if you need financial assistance--the point of MOPS is to connect with other women and help us be better moms! My very best friend lives in Boonville. She is a farmers wife. I know shes in groups but not sure. Like the other posters, Church, your kids friends, etc. I know how you feel, I have lots of "friends", but not any real close. I sell M. Kay and have met some really nice gals that way. They are of all ages, so that could be a good idea. If you have questions let me know.
I am in the same situation. We have lived in Missouri for 2 years now and I know no one except for my Husbands extended family. I tried doing the MOPS thing this fall, but all the women (as nice as they were) were much older than I (24) so it was hard to connect and make friendships. I'm hoping when my oldest starts pre-school this coming Fall I might meet some Mamas there.
Churches are a great place to meet people. Some have all kinds of groups or activities and sometimes age makes no difference. I have friends who are in their 20's to some who are in their 70's. Is your child in a preschool or daycare? Invite a child to your home or meet at a park then maybe you can start a fun relationship with that mom. If you work maybe form a relationship there. I started scrapbooking with a woman that I met in a playgroup I started through our school district. She and I were broke so we each bought different things and brought them to our "meeting". That one friend turned into several and now I have a whole group of wonderful friends. I have also done small get togethers and invited a friend or 2 and included a new person in the group. This was a no big deal thing and did not cost much. Hope some of this might help....
Go to church!! They will welcome you with open arms, not to mention all the fun activities they offer. I'm sure you will make many friends. Also, you could see if there is a play group for kids in your area, you could probably even ask on this site for one!!
