Pediatrician, hearing test. See if something's going on physically that is interfering with her concentration.
My child is in 2nd grade always made good grades, is a sweet good girl. After her 1st conferences meeting for this year she had 2 f's and all 3 teachers are concerned that she is not focused and want her evaluated. This has been bothering hearing this. My daughter said she is hearing humming noises when its time to pay attention and focus. ... help! !!
Pediatrician, hearing test. See if something's going on physically that is interfering with her concentration.
The first thing that came to mind was had she had her ears tested? My father had tinnitus and always had a sound in his ears. It made it very difficult to concentrate.
You can get that simply from having had an ear infection or even ear wax I believe also.
I would check with your pediatrician for sure - shame she's having a rough time. How is she when you read to her, or she reads to you, etc.? Do you notice the same thing?
Good luck :)
There is nothing wrong with getting her evaluated. The evaluation process won't hurt her but has the potential to help her. Contrary to what many people seem to believe, most teachers don't suggest evaluation unless we really feel there is an issue. The teachers do need to have documentation of what interventions they have tried. Typically there should be 6 weeks of documented intervention. You have every right to ask what interventions they have done.
There's something going on and you should have her evaluated. How is she with homework?
get her evaluated. have her pedi chack her out and don't let it bother you. get her help sooner rather than later. something is up and needs to be fixed.
Don't worry about the grades for the moment. I can't believe that second graders have honor rolls - that's ridiculous and way way way too much academic pressure.
But hearing noises? A sudden drop-off in focus? Pediatrician for a full work up, hearing test (the humming is worth investigating), and possible evaluation for focus and other processing issues.
Do not focus on the grades, and do not discuss the grades with your child. She will feel like a failure and that's just wrong.
Get a handle on why it bothers you to hear this. If 3 teachers agreed on something with my child, I'd be listening to them. Early intervention makes all the difference. If she had frequent strep throats or a persistent limp, wouldn't you do something about it?
So is she not doing her work at school or at home? This is a big change for her to suddenly go to Fs. I would definitely talk to her doctor, talk more to her teacher, get some kind of an evaluation done, and talk to the school counselor. Can you sit in the classroom a few times to observe what is going on? Is she being "hyper social" and more focused on her friends around her? What is she doing when the other kids are sitting and working? How has the teacher been handling this so far in the classroom? Can your daughter focus and get work done at home if you have her sit and work on something? I have pretty bad tinnitus and it does not stop me from concentrating. I would think that there could be something wrong though if she cannot focus to this extent (such as ADD, hearing loss, etc.) and that you need to see some professionals to get her tested.
Have her evaluated if her teachers recommend it.
Meanwhile, READ to her and with her. It's the most important education your child can get.
Hmmm...does she have that same problem when she's paying attention and focusing on tv or a video game? If so, then yes, get her tested. If not, then I'd look at other things. If you are going to ask the school to evaluate her, you need to put the request in writing in order to trigger the time frame deadlines they are supposed to observe. A verbal request will get you nowhere.
Definitely have her evaluated for potential medical issues (such as hearing) by her pediatrician but also consider whether she might need to be in a more advanced/GATE class. She may just be bored.
None of the forms of ADHD occur suddenly. There's usually an inkling of trouble for a while. Kids with ADHD will hyperfocus on the things that interest them, so you may not see the same level of distraction with certain activities. With our son, that's video games. It's an intense level of focus beyond what you'd find with a neurotypical kid. However, 95% of everything else in his day is difficult for him.
Teachers spend hundreds of hours with hundreds of kids over their career. They know not normal when they see it. They are not docs but they do see normal and abnormal stands out.
For instance. Put a room full of bank tellers in a room and put a couple of counterfeit bills mixed in with the real money and they'll be able to tell that it's not right by the way it feels. Same with teachers. They see normal normal normal and then someone stands out.
Have the school set it up and work with them. They might even cover the cost of what happens at school. They should have a school psychologist who is able to come in the classroom and observe and they usually have a staff or two that can also pop in to observe. Together they all put in their reports and if they're seeing similar things they know there is something going on and that further evaluation is needed.
You can also call your insurance company and see what they recommend. They should be able to tell you who they have a contract with that is legally certified to make a mental health diagnosis as to ADD/ADHD or any other mental issue. The sound in her ears could be nothing more than crud in the canal too. It could be more but hopefully it's just biological. An ENT/ORL doc could do an in depth check on her ears too.
We had a grandson that went deaf from ear infections. He was on antibiotics for weeks but they never stopped the infection. It was deep in the inner ear.
When the ENT doc went in to put tubes in he had to spend about an hour on each ear going inside to clean out old infection debris. Once his ears were cleaned out deep inside the doc worked on the ear drum and then put tubes in them. He could ear instantly and it was scary. My point is that sometimes they can only see something inside if they GO inside.
But doing ear/hearing evals and then doing psychological evals can't be bad or wrong for the kiddo.
