My results came back abnormal for the trisomy 18 gene. I have googled( i know i know bad idea) what this means and now I am scared beyond anything. Has anyone else gone through this and things have been fine? Everything I see is really scarey and it says my chances are 1 in 40 for actually having the t18. I have no idea what to do. as my results were emailed to me from the lab. I have not spoken to the doctor yet as I got them on a saturday and she doesn't work the weekends at the clinic I go to.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went for an indepth ultrasound and the doctor said that my baby had none of the markers and was developing well.He also said because I was so early in my pregnancy (16 weeks at the ultra sound) that I had to come back in four weeks. However my husband and I found out that we are having a BOY!!!!! so far so good!!
Thank you to every one that responded.I really appreciate it!

I had several miscarriages and one of my babies ended up going for genetic testing. It was a Trisomy issue, not 18, but it was totally incompatible with life. Only 3 or 4 children ever born in the US with it, ever. Yes, I Googled. (BUT I found out after the fact not before).

Let's look at the good that can come out of this. Information is power in planning for the future. (You are going to be stressed out for a few more weeks just in the stress of waiting...I am guessing that they will do an amnio, if you want to do more testing that way...It also sounds like a lot of Trisomy 18 issues should be able to be seen on ultrasound). Finding out early gives you the information to plan for the future. Do research. learn about any medical issues, know questions to ask at appointments, etc etc.

Honestly, all of my friends that have done the quad scan who have has "something" show up with different Trisomies have all gone on to have health typical babies with no genetic issues. I have heard this over and over with my friends through many different pregnancies. Sorry I can't tell you first hand that I have had this happen and everything was okay. But I have held friend's hand through this issue of waiting and things have always turned out well for them.

Good luck!! I will keep you in my thoughts!

When I was pregnant with my oldest, his u/s and bloodwork indicated a higher than average chance of T-18. I had amnio and he was fine. He's 19 years old now and perfectly healthy.

The screening for my second son came back with a higher than normal risk for Down syndrome so I had amnio for him as well. He's also fine.

1 in 40 is a scary stat but remember that the chances are 39/40 that he's fine. Talk to your doctor next week and learn about additional testing that's available. You can have a more advanced u/s or even amnio, which is invasive and does carry risk of miscarriage. A friend's baby did have T-18 and his u/s showed severe problems.

T-18 is very, very rare but false screenings for it are pretty common. I know it's a terrifying test result to get. Hopefully you'll get some reassuring news soon - know that in the vast majority of these positive screenings, the baby really is just fine.

When I had my triple scene done (the older version of that test) it came back with a high probability that my son had downs. At first I was completely freaked out, but then I remembered that these tests are just an earlier indicator and are often wrong. I got an amnio so I could either put my mind at ease, or if he did have downs, so I could prepare accordingly. Turns out he was just fine, as is often the case. Try not to worry until you know there is something to worry about (I know easier said then done!).

I'm a mother of three. I had the testing done with my first two pregnancies. Everything was normal with the first one but I received an abnormal result with my second one (probability for Down's syndrome). I followed up with a 3D ultrasound which luckily showed no additional markers so I did not do the amino. When I became pregnant with my third child I opted out of doing the screening altogether.

Hopefully by now you've had a chance to talk with your doctor. If not, hang in there!
