Hysterectomy Possibility-need Feedback and Advice, Please

I went for my annual yesterday with an ob/gyn and discovered I have a mass on my uterus. I'm still trying to come with terms with what this might mean. The doctor still needs to do an ultrasound to find out what kind of mass it is, but she states that a hysterectomy is probably the way to go. I've heard so many negative things about these procedures. May I please hear from all of you as to what you've gone through?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to those of you who responded to my request. I received some really good advice especially the link to hystersister.com. I will be getting a second opinion after this first doctor's diagnosis definitely. I will keep you updated. Again...thank you!

Hi L.,
I had a Vaginal Hysterectomy done and I dont regret it. I have always had female problems, had my right falopian tube and my right ovary removed when I was 24 yrs old. Then when I was 32 my left fallopian tube was removed. Kept having problems and was always in pain, sex about killed me and I was having bleeding problems too. They finally removed everything when I was 38. No regrets other than I wish I still had my ovary so I wouldnt have early menapause. They can do your hysterectomy vaginally and leave your ovairies so you dont go thru early menapause. Also get a second opinon. My doctor has been in Las Vegas for 25 years and is the best. His name is Dr.Stephen Montoya ###-###-####. He is also Hyspanic ( I am not) and if anything can at least give you a second opinion. I know it sounds scary as I was scared too. My doctor told me for 4 years that I needed one but I wanted to have kids. He never pushed it and always supported my decisions, even when it didnt agree with his medical opinion. After the hysterectomy I wished I had gotten it sooner. I never did get pregnat but did adopt 2 children. Dr. Montoya told me after my hysterectomy that he knew that I would never get pregnant but he knew I needed to find that out myself ( went threw IVF to try and get pregnant and that didnt work either). So if you dont want any more kids you dont need your uterus. If your dealing with a mass it needs to be removed either with a hysterecomy or removing the mass. Ask your doctor if they can do the hysterectomy vaginally which means they go thru your vagina and remove your urterus with out cutting you open from hip bone to hip bone. Additionally ask about keeping your ovaries even if it's just one. One ovary will produce the same amount of hormones as 2.
Whatever the outcome it will be alright.
Hope this helps and good luck
N.

Hi L., My name is C.. I am 35. Almost 2 years ago I had a hysterectomy. I was already in premenopause. We had decided I was done having kids (we have 5 boys).

I've had endometriosis since I was 12. I've had several lap surgeries to laser the endometriosis off. After the last lap sugery they found cysts on my ovaries which were causing some major pain. After my last baby a little over 2 years ago I was bleeding everyother week for a week. I was in pain all the time.

So for me it was an easy decision to say "take it all out, I don't want to deal with it anymore". It was the best thing that I ever did. I use natural products to help with the menopause issues and they are great without all the nasty side effects that you can get from hrt's.

There are so many options now for hysterectomies that are less evasive. I did mine the hard way I did it with the standard incision. But for me it was worth it. They can do it vaginally and they can do it with the laprascope now to.

I would definitely recommend getting a second opinion. I've had many opinions and I made the decision myself. Actually my doctor told me to wait. But I knew it was going to be sooner or later and I was wearing down and wanted to be able to take care of my family, and not be laying in bed all the time because I was in pain or to weak to do anything for them. So I went to the surgeon and talked with him and told him I wanted it done ASAP. For me it was the best decision I could have ever made.

I would recommend www.hystersister.com as well. They answered tons of my questions. You can also email me at ____@____.com if you have any questions for me.

Hi L.:

The first thing I would do is wait to see exactly what this "mass" is. Then I would find out what all of my options were. Ask if a hysterectomy would ensure that the problem never returns. And get a second opinion.

Here's a little of my history. When I was 25, and just pregnant with my second child, my doctor told me that they had found cancer on my cervix. I was given several options for treatment (every one of those options scared the hell out of me). I was told that even with a hysterectomy, there was no guarantee that the cancer would not return, just a better chance. I went ahead and had the "cancer" removed, while I was pregnant, because I felt this was the best option for me. My son is perfectly fine, and I have been cancer free since 2003. But I have had other doctors tell me they would have never done that surgery while I was pregnant.

My point is, what one doctor sees as the best option is not neccessarily what another doctor would do. Which is why I say get a second opinion. And the best advice I can give is for you to bring another person with you when you discuss your options. As a doctor is giving you this news, your mind goes a bit numb (especially if it's a bad prognosis) and it's very hard for you to process all of the information when you've just possibly heard the worst news of your life. Having someone else there will help you to sort out a lot of things when you're deciding what to do later on.
I hope some of this helps you out. Try to stay positive, even though I know it's difficult. Talk with those people you feel close to about all of your feelings, fears, ideas, everything. Make sure your doctor answers every single one of your questions to your satisfaction, no matter how trivial you might think they are. This is your health and your life, you need to make sure you know every thing there is to know about what is going on. Good luck and take care of yourself. If you do ever find yourself in need of a good ear, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Hi L.,
This sounds like it might be fibroids. I think the ultrasound will help determine that. I'm Latina too and I have these myself. I was told if they didn't cause pain or heavy bleeding or was not planning to have children I could just leave them alone.

Good luck,
N.

If your ob/gyn suggested that--go for it! You will do well i don't know if you have any surgery prior to this but if you did and there is no complication then you will do just fine--and also, it really depends on you how fast your body recovers after the procedure--some people takes longer and some don't...
I work in the hospital---we deal with patients that is having a procedure like that and they do just fine---stay in the hospital for a day or two then go home-just after you had it done--don't stay too much in bed--move around do some walking especially that--just don't do any lifting 'till it's ok with your ob/gyn that is my advise to you--we get the patient up the next day on any type of procedure--So good luck and let me know how things went and you will do just fine!
