"Seeing Mom's That Have Had to Have a Hystorectomy"

I went to the doctors yesterday for my ultrasound results for the third time this year and I was told that I need to have a hysterectomy. The reason is because the fibroid I have is getting larger and causing me to bleed all the time now. I have already had a procedure like Novasure for the fibroid and it helped for two years now it is back and getting bigger. After the two years the doctor put me on the pill and it helped for a few month and now it is starting all over again. I also have a large cyst on my left ovary that they he said is rather large and needs to come out so they would leave my other ovary in. The doctor wants to do it vaginal so I will be in the hospital one day and off work for two weeks. I have a busy month and want to know if I should do this now and take care of the bleeding or wait until my events this month are over. Also how much pain will I be in. I am nervous and scarred but want to feel better. Any advice would help thanks so much and Happy Fourth of July to all the Mom's and families out there.

Hi L. t. I had a hystrectomy a few years back for all the same reason except my blood count dropped down to a 1 it should have been around 10 or higher i needed a blood transfusion. Keep check on that to build your body go to my web page to get some immune help before and after great for the family. You should not go up stairs or drive for for a few weeks the dr. Will tell you that and don't pick up anything heavy and no sweeping. Pain on 1-10 about 7 not bad. The web is living4something.cyberwize.com i think you will see the benefits all natural. Good luck please give feedback from my site thanks and good luck.

L.,

I had a vaginal hysterectomy about 20 years ago due to Adenomyosis (internal endometriosis), in which a one hour operation turned into 4 hours as my uterus fell apart during the operation and the doctor had to go in and make sure he got it all out. The recovery time was about 2 weeks (and at that time our sons where 8 and 5) and there are restrictions as to what you can do, but the recovery time is not that bad. They did leave my ovaries, so that does help a lot. I really have not had any issues or problems after the hysterectomy and do not for one minute regret doing it.

I had a hyst three years ago because of adenomysosis (endo IN the uterus walls) that caused bleeding all the time AND super painful cramps all the time. It was the best thing I ever did. Not to mention the joy of not having a period - ever again! I didn't have it vaginally though I heard the recovery isn't as bad if you do it. My pain came from the incision. You won't be able to lift anything (kids) for awhile to avoid busting internal stitches. One thing though... don't let them take your ovaries! You still need those to produce hormones. You will feel so much better after it all and be able to handle and enjoy your kids so much more. As for when to have it done, it's up to you and how much pain/bleeding you're in. You might have to wait a month or two anyway between scheduling the surgery and having an actual date. Good luck. Hystersisters.com is a great site.

maybe look into other options instead of hysterectomy if you haven't already like uterine fibroid embolization or focus ultrasound/exablation treatment as these are some other treatments for fibroids

I had very heavy bleeding from fibroids years ago. I had surgery to remove the fibroid rather than a hysterectomy since I wanted to have kids. Before the surgery the doctor prescribed a shot to make it much smaller, which also cut down on the bleeding. The surgery was easy with very little recovery time needed. I was just in the hospital for part of the day. The doctor was Dr Valle with Northwestern ###-###-####. The nurses called him the king of fibroids!

GET A SECOND OPINION!

Hysterectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the US and is very often unnecessary. It is often performed when other procedures could be used instead.

If you can wait, wait. I waited 8 weeks to have my surgery and I am glad that I did. I got all my affairs in order. I needed it because it is not the easiest recovery. Everyone is different and I am not a whim but it really took a while to recover.

Maybe another opinion. I have a very large fibroid as well. The last time I got checked, they said it was as if my uterus was the size if being 14-16 weeks pregnant. It has been causing me to bleed (unfortunately for MANY years) since my daughter's birth (18 yrs ago)! The gyne told me it's not doing anything and MAY shrink with menopause. I just grin and bear it because I don't want to go thru any surgery. I'm afraid of hospitals and can't really afford to take time off of work. I know I should probably do something, but at this time in my life, I choose to wait. I would talk to another gyne just for a 2nd opinion. Good luck, post what you find out.

Hi L.,
I recently had a vaginal hysterectomy. I was worried, about the pain, recovery time, when would I be able to drive? My husband works full time and our families live far away. So.. we planned it like a vacation. He was able to take a week off to care for our child. Friends helped.

Ask your doctor if it matters if you wait a few weeks/months? Make sure you have explored all you options. Hystersisters.com helped me unedrstand some of my concerns.

I to have fibroids, and dealt with heavy bleeding 3 wks out of every month. I had an ablation using Novasure done a week ago. It's an out patient procedure with a one day recovery time. Other people I know have had this done and haven't had a period since. Check with your doctor about all of your options!

I don't know how much help I will be but here goes. My girlfriend had the same problem, constanty fibroids, remove them, remove them, remove them and they finally after all her pain suggested the hyst. and that would end all that for her. She was nervous, doesn't have any kids and didn't know what to do. She did it and said it was the best decision she ever made. They left 1 ovary so she wouldn't go into menapause. She said it was very painful to recover but any major surgery is. I would do it when you have the help to take care of your kids because you can't take care of them after that. Figure out the best time when someone can be there with you for a couple of weeks until you are back on your feet. Good luck and you will so much better after it's done.

Your health is so much more important than your calendar. You are probably anemic as well? My mom had a fibroid that started to come out. She had pains as if she was in labor and had to have emergency surgery for it (ended up have a hysterectomy because of it) I wouldn't take chances and wait, just do it.

You may want to ask your doctor (or a specialist) about "uterine fibroid embolization." It's a procedure where the blood flow is cut off to the fibroid (and you get to keep your uterus!) My sister had it done for her fibroids, and it only meant one night in the hospital and minimal recuperation time.

I agree with getting a second opinion, but I have to say that the fact that your doctor is planning to keep your one ovary is a good sign that s/he is taking an informed and conservative approach -- in a good way. I would have it as soon as you are able to make the arrangements you need to make in order to have as peaceful a recovery period as possible. But don't put it off too long. I cleaned my incision with hydrogen peroxide daily and put vitamin e oil on it and that helped the healing. Also, I would recommend eating bland, dairy free foods (not much meat) for your first few days to allow your digestion to get moving again.

I am having a hysterectomy done in two weeks. They found cancer in my uterus. It should have been caught early enough that it is treatable, but in your case I urge you to go ahead and do it and get it over with or get a second opinion if you are questioning it. I also became anemic when I was bleeding all the time. I don't mean you have to cancel everything. First you will have to find out anyway when they can schedule it. I for instance am having a visit from my son in the service who I haven't seen in a very long time, so luckily they couldn't schedule it for two weeks anyway. I'm just saying if you can get it over with do it. I am not sure what vaginal is about, as they will be using a robot in my case. Either way probably figure in recovery time, also. If you can wait it out according to how your schedule goes then that actually might be good. Just be sure to eat things with iron and take the vitamins if you are bleeding a lot. Good luck and enjoy your family.
