My doctor is reccomending I have a hysterectomy. Of course I will have a list of questions to ask him when I speak to him but was wondering what others have experienced. I have young children I am wondering what the recovery time is for a full hysterectomy (not sure if it will be full surgery or laproscopic etc.) Any info is appreciated!

What can I do next?

I had my hysterectomy on Feb 7, 2011 - and I do NOT regret it ONE BIT!!!!

I had EVERYTHING removed and have NOT needed ANY synthetic drugs/hormones.

It was done laproscopically and vaginally - did all the work via laproscope and took it all out vaginally. I was in the hospital for less than 24 hours. I was shopping on Thursday for a new stove.

I had a WONDERFUL care-giver - my sister so I literally had NOTHING to worry about (except that she tried to burn down my house! SMILES!) but really? she took WONDERFUL care of me and because of that I was great in record time.

I have two boys at home - 11 and 8 and they were great!

GOOD LUCK!

I had a complete hysterectomy when my son was a year old. I'd had so many surgeries I lost count and was actually scheduled for one when I found out I was pregnant with my son. I had suffered for years and I have to say that I felt so much better after having the procedure.
Mine was done vaginally and laparoscopically and I was amazed how well I felt. Because of damage caused by endometriosis, it was more complicated than some procedures and I was in the hospital a little longer, but a day after getting home, I was up and dressed and went to the grocery store with my mother who was staying with us to help me out. I felt pretty darn great. I had to be careful about lifting my baby, etc and I didn't drive before being given permission, but the pain was minimal compared to other things I'd been through.
I'm sure everyone's experience is different, but I sailed right through it. I felt so much better after it was done. It really changed my life for the better.

Best wishes.

First of the the site www.hystersisters.com has a ton of info (sometimes TMI) but I learned a lot from it.

I had my complete hysterectomy, abdominal incision, took EVERYTHING about 10 yrs ago. Bikini line incision, you can hardly see it now.

Not to "Shout" here but....IT WAS THE BEST THING I EVER DID

I have never felt better, looked better. I did not have some of the common issues.. I started on the HRT patch at the hospital and I've been on it since. NOT 1 issue. NO weight gain, NO swelly belly, and the sex drive skyrocketed for me... I was freee...no more possibility of getting pregnant.

I couldn't drive for 2 weeks which is standard. At surgery, they put an abdominal binder on me and I wore that things faithfully. I was at a track meet 3 weeks later.

Recovery... has a lot to do your your attitude, your current health status (I am a walker and I keep fit).

Again, the worst part of the entire process was waiting until surgery day.

I had the option of ablation but my Dr. said it does not always take and I wanted to be DONE with everything. I am SO glad I made my decision. I feel great and look great.

Good luck!

I had my hyst. in 1999. Couldn't have it vaginally because I had had surgery many years before. Best thing that I've ever done for me! Recovery was much like recovery after having a baby. In lieu of hormones, I took a natural product called Promensil. It has red clover in it and will stop the hot flashes. My doctor told me to take it because I couldn't take hormones.

It is a bit late...
What is the reason he;/ she is reccomending it?
