My husband is adopting my 7 year old daughter in the next month and I wanted to get them both something that would "connect" them and remind them of the adoption and what it means. Does anyone have any creative/inexpensive ideas? Thank you!!

What can I do next?

I love this figurine http://www.demdaco.com/detail.aspx?ID=10227
You could also write something for both of them, like how proud you are of them both.

Hi R. --

How 'bout a tree? If you have a place to put it, you could buy a small, inexpensive one that they could plant together and take care of together over the years. If you own property, that would be the obvious place to plant it, but if not, maybe in a park or a favorite fishing spot or some such. You could tie a big bow around it every Adoption Day anniversary!

I wish you and your family the very best!

My top suggestions are books & jewelry.
I adopted my 5 year old step daughter in August. I bought her & I necklaces, mine is a husband, wife & two children (we also have a 1 yr old son). Hers is a pearl Angel. We also bought her a book by Max Lucado, titled: God Thinks You're Wonderful. I had a photo album made with pictures of Her & I (All were of just her & I except one from our wedding, & one from when her brother was born). We bought some other angels to display around the house too. My mom bought all of us angels from the willow tree collection. What ever you do, Be sure you write directly on the item when & who it was from.

How about a piece of jewlery? It doesn't have to be expensive or fancy. You can get some fairly cheap, nice stuff at department stores...

Look at things remembered. I went there and they have $49 bracelets for $19 right now. They have gemstones and a little butterfly charm on it as well as a medallion that you can inscribe the adoption date on. they are "bridesmaid" bracelets. they look perfect. They also have children's sized ones if her wrist is really little. Congrats!!

R.,
When my now ex-husband adopted my son when he was 4 he got him framed copies of the poems the adoption creed and one about getting your name from your father and what it means. We also made the adoption memorable by inviting grandpartents, aunts, uncles, ect. and took lots of pictures that we were then able to frame for him. We also had a small party after for family and friends.

I'll second the jewelry. I think a little silver bracelet would be great.

I also want to say I think it's great your husband is adopting your daughter. I was also adopted by my dad. I think I was 9 at the time. It made us one unit and made me feel like I belonged. Congrats to all of you.

When my husband adopted our boys they were 5 and 6 years old. We all went and had our last name put on the same shirt so when we all walked together everyone could see that we were family. Our boys are now 22 and 23 and we still have the shirts. This could be an addition to some of the others idea's. A braclet with her new name carved in it would be a nice touch as well.
I am sure you all are very excited and congrats.

Congratulations! What a wonderful occaision for your family. Why not have a special meal with favorite foods of both father and daughter? I also think a photo of the two of them in a special father and daughter frame would be special. Each year you can celebrate the adoption as their shared "birthday." What ever you choose to do, it will be special. Liz

I completely agree with the Dad/daughter date coupon book. That is such a sweet idea. Jewelry is also a great idea, a sweet charm bracelet with the family's last name!? I love that you posted this question because my husband will soon be adopting my daughter that he has been a father to since she was 7 months old and she is now almost 5! Congrats to you and your family!

Congratulations to you and your family.

I recommend you get your husband the book entitled, "How to raise a successful daughter". It will really give him a good perspective on his impact to your daughter's life and how best to work toward a good relationship.

Now that doesn't haven't to be the gift, but I suggest that as a worthwhile investment into his newly found circumstances as a father.

Meanwhile, the ideas of jewelry sound good, but not sure if your husband wears any jewelry. If he wears a watch, have it engraved and then the braclet for your daughter can also be engraved.

Or have a few special pictures taken of just the two of them together (maybe with the official adoption paper) and frame one for each so that your husband can have his picture at work and your daughter can have one in her bedroom at home.

When my husband adopted my son the judge gave my son a ty kitten and that still is special for him.
Since she is 7 maybe if your husband would do it, a webkinz account that is just for the two of them to nurture and love. Make sure he will get on with her and play and interact. That way it is a dad and daughter thing that they do, that way it lasts to build the bond.

Or a coupon book (homemade) for dad/daughter dates. I remember going on them after my dad adopted me and they are some of my favorite childhood memories. Nothing grand just out to bk or McDonalds for qt time. Or to somewhere fun...

Just a couple ideas.

that is how old my daughter was when my husband adopted her. one thing she got at our celebration was a cabbage patch doll and i thought that was the neatest idea. we have a little "birthday" party each year on the anniversary. but one thing you could get them as a together gift could be maybe matching shirts that say something to the effect of "he's my dad/she's my daughter" with an arrow pointing at each other when they stand next to each other. or matching friendship bracelets. or homemade coupons to redeem for a daddy/daughter date night, playing board games night, getting spoiled, etc. hope this helps. congratulations!
