Sol-U-Mel. Soak up any excess that you can, spray Sol-U-Mel. Wait a few minutes and then wipe up with damp sponge.

Enzymatic Cleaner.

We use Kids'n'Pets, but there are several varieties available in petstores.

You DO have to soak the area with the cleaner (so it gets into the backing as well) and let it sit for awhile. But then, you'd never know (or smell) that anything had happened.

I would just use carpet cleaner, but if itis a repetative smelly issue look for "Nature's Miracle" which I think you can find at pet stores.

Sol U Mel can be used for other cleaning purposes too - cleaning up nail polish, paint and I've even read tar. Plus clean markers off walls and can be used to get stains out of clothes. I call Sol U Mel my miracle cleaner.

I haven't read what others have posted, but my family and I have bred dogs for most of my life and what we do is put corn starch over it. Put a good pile and then once it's dry vacuum it up. It gets out everything including the smell. If the spot has dried before you got to it, spray it with water and then pile the CS on.
I would, being a germaphob, would get one of those enzyme cleaners after the corn starch. Just in case. But yeah this has worked for us for years.

get one of those enzyme-based cleaners like Nature's Miracle or Kids'n'Pets - you can find it in pet stores or places like Target - these are designed specifically for cleaning/deodorizing 'accidents' by little four-legged or two-legged family members :-)
