How to Remove Baby Poop Stains?

I breastfeed & cloth diaper, so I am familiar with the yellow poop stains! Fear not, they are actually easy to get rid of. Wash the clothing item however you usually do, but dry it in the sun! That's all--sunshine removes those yellow stains. I have hung out diapers that looked totally yellow, and they were clean and white when I came back to take the dry diapers off the line. Now, anything that has already been through the dryer is going to stay stained. The dryer sets stains. I never even have problems with poop stains on diapers, because I dry everything on the clothesline (yes, even with a baby and a toddler underfoot), so poo stains sunbleach out, and most other stains never set, so I can get 'em out in the next washing if I didn't catch 'em in the first time around.

My mom told me to use Ivory dishwashing soap to get stains out (this includes food stains as well). I usually keep some by all the sinks in the house. As soon as I can (immediately if possible) i prewash the clothes in the sink, cold water and use the soap. By the time I get them into the wash all the stains, including poop stains, are out.

Oxiclean has saved my life--and my laundry! I buy a large box of it at Costco. I keep most of it by my washer/dryer, but also a little tupperware container of it in the kids' bathroom.

Whenever my baby has a poopy blowout, I sprinkle Oxiclean detergent on it and run the clothes under HOT water while I scrub/swish the poopy. Most of it will come off that way. You can literally watch the stain disappear, just like on the commercial! Then I sprinkle some more Oxiclean on the stain and let it soak in a shallow sink of HOT water. The hotter, the better. It doesn't take long to see the stain go away completely. Then wring out the excess water and wash as normal whenever you're ready to do a load of laundry. You would never know the poop stain was there!

I also throw in a scoop of Oxiclean with every load as a laundry detergent booster. Works great!

I have the same problem...my little one doesn't have normal BM...he explodes every time! Goes everywhere...legs...back...front...EVERYWHERE!!!
So all his nice clothes were getting ruined!
I am using Dreft Stain Removers ( the pink one for baby clothes)...first I take out the "excess" than spray few times and I really try to wash it under the tap with running water...only when is just a little yellow left is when I put in the washmachine...so far I've got all the yellow stains out! Even on white onesis.

OxyClean!! The baby version with a pink top. you can find it at target or baby r'us. this trully is the best product.

I used Zout on my son's clothes and it does pretty well. The only thing is it still took some time in the bathroom, running water through the back of the stain, spraying it with Zout, scrubbing the stain, and rinsing again. Sometimes I would have to do it twice to get it all out, then I would spray it one more time just before putting it in the washing machine. I got 95% of all the stains out. Hope this helps! Get the item wet with the hottest water it can handle. Then using a combination of plain unscented Ivory bar soap and a toothbrush. Make sure you get the soap on both sides of the fabric. Use the toothbrush to lightly scrub it into the weave. Rinse. Then let it soak in some oxyclean for 30 min. Rinse and wash with the rest of the laundry. Dry in the sun. Sun naturally bleaches things. I don't suggest it for dark clothing or clothing with highly saturated colors.

Simple Green and Spray n Wash. Simple Green is less toxic. and yes the green color even works on whites!

I would say sun drying them would take out those stains. I do cloth diapering and have sun dried my sons diaper and they alway come out looking like new. No stains what so ever.

Baby Oxy-clean. Depending on your soaking load 1-3 scoops and let it soak for 2 -3 days (with like colors). This stuff gets up almost any stain. Good luck.

Hang the clothes outside in the sun. The UV light will greatly diminish the stains. I do my own cloth diapers so I can tell you this works and is free!

As soon as you can, put the clothing item in a solution of BIZ to soak. I literally have a bowl going at all times, that I am constantly adding to. BIZ does make a baby product, but I have not tried it, having not had a problem with the original. BIZ has become a bit harder to find of late, but it is still available at the larger Safeway stores & definitely Walmart.

Of course, you NEVER want to dry the item in the dryer until you know the stain is gone. Drying will definitely help set the stain.

FAVORITE CLEANING TIP, courtesy of Queen of Clean, is for grease stains. Pre-treat with a grease fighting dish washing detergent ASAP & let sit for as long as possible. Wash the item as usual, preferably on warm, but this is not absolutely necessary. I always prefer to air dry when treating stains, but if you accidentally do throw it in the dryer, there is still hope. Just repeat the pre-spotting & let sit, until you have another load. Now here's the SCARY tip, but it really works: Add one can of Coca Cola Classic! It really does work....

Make sure to ALWAYS wash/soak in COLD water. Hot water cooks the protein into the clothing. Make sure the stain is completely gone before adding hot water or putting in the dryer.

We had the same problem. I would spray the stains right away with Spray and Wash and then soak them in a mixture of warm water and baby oxyclean powder (This can make colors run so just be aware). Finally I would wash the clothes on warm with a little baby oxyclean in the water. This worked the majority of the time but it was tough. The only other thing I can suggest is making sure her diapers are the right size. I know my son would always start leaking when his diapers didn't fit right. Good luck!

There's a baby version of a Shout-type spray-on pre-cleaner called Totally Toddler that works wonders. Dreft pre-treating spray works well too. You can get both at BabiesRUs.

something related to the topic but not quite answering your question~ have you heard of the book Diaper Free Baby? it's about something called Elimination Communication where you take your baby to the toilet and have them go there instead of in a diaper. it sounds absurd at first, but after checking out the book i knew i could totally do it. i started my son at 5 weeks and by age 1 he was taking most poo's in the toilet and we were catching lots of his pee's. many moms i tell about it wish that they'd heard of it before their kiddo turned 1, which at this age they are considered 'diaper trained.' just a thought~

Spray n Wash worked for me. Spray as soon as you see it (soaking the area in the spray). Put it in the laundry basket and then wash as normal. It worked almost every time.

My daughters did the same thing. Immediately take the clothes under cold water and take a scrub brush (the kind you use on the bathtub) and scrub gently to moderately while under the water and use hand soap, like Softsoap while doing this. Stains came right out. Then I put Spray and wash on it if it was still slightly visible and then washed the clothes. Seems to really work for me. It's amazing how yellow their poop is and how it stains everything so powerfully. I remember throwing away some clothes with my first child because so much of the material was stained, I just called it quits before I even tackled it. I feel for ya.

I have the same problem, but SUN will always take care of that! Dry your laundry on direct sun and trust me, problem solved! Good luck:-)

OXYCLEAN! we had a small bucket of oxyclean and water on constant standby for the first 5 months or so. everytime he pooped through something we'd rinse it and toss it in. Let it site there until laundry time. it works wonders. we haven't had to toss anythign due to poop stains....and we had some SERIOUS breastfed baby blowouts

Soak in Oxiclean mix as soon as you can and leave it soaking overnight or longer. Also add another scoop of oxiclean in the washing machine when you wash it. My children's clothes always came out stain-free, poop stains and all.

The hydrogen peroxide cleaners like OxyClean (there are others--look for the words "peroxide" or "enzymatic" on the label) will take ANY colored poop, wine, vomit, etc. out. I just wish they had been on the market when my small ones were exploding, also...

I use a pre treater called Totally Toddler, it is the best thing I can find for baby stains, definitly better than the Dreft stuff, I've only found it at Babies R Us in the last few years. I will also do the pre-soak setting on my washer. When I know there's something really bad in there I use Oxy Clean in the laundry along with the dreft. Check it before you dry it. If it's still in there i put some stain stick on it and let it sit for the next round of laundry. My daughter's hand me downs look terrific despite major diaper blow outs and frequent spit ups.

I changed all my household, cleaning and bath products to all eco friendly brands that contain no harsh chemicals. The
Pre-spot brand gets everything out.

Try Shout (http://www.shoutitout.com/preserve-colors.aspx). It really works! Just spray on as soon as possible. I've sprayed it on and even let the clothes sit for a day and the stains still came out. Make sure you wash the stained clothes in cold water and if your baby has sensitive skin or you just don't like chemicals so much, use a second rinse.

have you tried Oxi-clean spray? I use that and it works pretty well. In addition to that, I use the Oxi Clean powder with the laundry detergent. Most of the time, this will work, but not everytime.

A little about me:
I'm a full-time working outside of the home mom with a stay at home daddy who does the laundry in the house. We have a 7 year old girl and a 7 month old baby girl.

Oxi Clean spray works wonders. I recently washed my daughters new dress and my 8 year old had left a small marker in the pocket of a pair of pants. The dress came out with blue ink all over it. I had to use the Oxi Clean spray and wash 4 or 5 times but the entire stain is gone. It was a huge stain on the entire front of the dress. The only reason I had to do so many treatments was for one small part. After the first spray, soak in and wash the majority of the stain was gone.

Spray Shout on every stain before washing and add Clorox 2 to every load of color-safe clothing. Add bleach when washing whites. Check items before throwing them in the dryer. Once they are dried with heat, the stains are usually pretty well set it. I really have found Shout to be better than Spray and Wash or Oxy Clean stain removers and Clorox 2 really does help. My son had GERD (reflux) for the first 6 months of his life (he is now 2 years old). Talk about puke! He also has major poop explosions! Good luck!

If you soak the clothes overnight in oxiclean, they'll come right out. The other thing I've found that works is the Spray 'N Wash Stain Stick. Rinse out the majority of the poo and then use the stain stick. Leave it on until laundry day...the stain will probably be gone by the time you wash the clothes.

Multiple people have mentioned that putting wet post washed clothes with poop stains on a drying rack in the sun for jsut a bit really works!

I hand wash the soiled clothes in dish soap and cold water. Works every time. I have found that spray and wash only works for food and nature-type stain, not on baby poop.

I cloth diaper and my daughter is now 14 months and haven't had a problem with any staining. I saok in Oxyclean for an hour+ that really seems to help and any stains that are left are not there after hanging her diapers/cloths out in the sun to dry... is amazing how the sun bleaches out any stain made from natural sources.

So my biggest suggestion is to put the stained clothes in full sunlight for at least a few hours and see if that helps.

After 4 kids, I could get stains out of nearly anything. My favorite way to get yellow poop stains out of clothing was 1)get it soaking or washed right away - and 2) I got a dish pan and put 3 scoops of oxyclean in the bottom, filled the dishpan with water and soaked the clothes - sometimes only 1 day was needed, sometimes it took 3 days. And then wash as normal. This gets out EVERYTHING - and I use this even to this day with my teenagers and the messes they get into.

Joy dishwashing liquid. Works every time.

I use the stain remover Zout and a toothbrush to loosen the stain out before I throw it in the wash. Works everytime.

The only thing that I have found to work is a product from the health food store called Bac-Out; I still use it for my 7 year old son. It works MOST of the time on any organic stains (poop, grass stains, food stains, blood). For poop stains I found it only works if I soak the stain with the Bac-Out soon after it happens and let it soak before washing. I filled up a travel size shampoo bottle to keep in my diaper bag and take when I travel. Again though if the stain has been sitting awhile without the Bac-Out I usually can't do anything for it. Actually I am with Heather on this one. Sunshine. It is weird, but it works. Give it a try! Just leave your soiled stuff in the sun. Made a world of difference on my daughters diaper covers!

The sun works wonders hang it out the dry. Also I use Bac-Out Stain & Odor Eliminator from Bi-O-Kleen as a pre-treat to soak the cloths in and there is a baby stain remover from Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Stain Remover, Baby Blossom,. Works great. If one doesn't work I try the next.
