How to Get Rid of the Paci

Once again a sleep question BUT this one involves getting rid of the paci. My 4.5 month old uses it to sleep. It is apart of our soothing process w/ rocking before naps/nighttime. However, I am so over putting it back in when it falls out. During his long afternoon nap I replace it 2-3x and at night the same 2-3x. It is disrupting both of our sleep patterns. It is like he is in a panic that it isn't there. My first son didn't use one so this is all new to me. My 4m old has such a strong need to suck so I am asking for ideas on how to slowly ween him off the paci. I have tried placing his hand in his mouth and that makes him very upset. I have tried a silky/lovey but he is a bit young to self soothe w/ this (this is what my 2.5 year old uses to self soothe). Any ideas??? THANK YOU SO MUCH

Yeah....this is part of having a newborn with a pacifier. Soon enough he will be able to "get it himself". I wouldn't take it away yet, though. He is too young, and he obviously needs it for soothing, or he wouldn't cry when it falls out.

Just notice how much he ate, and make sure that his need to suck isn't because he's hungry. About this age, there becomes a difference :O)

When your little one is about 15 months, and still has the pacifier, THEN ask for help weening.....but, right now, he really needs it....

Just think of it this way, if you didn't have the pacifier to soother him, then you would be getting up MORE than 2x's a night to soothe him. So, the pacifier is working to help you get more rest :O)

I agree with the other posts, your little guy is a sucker...as is my baby girl. Think about it this way, if he didn't have his binky, he would have his thumb...and thumbs are very difficult to cut off to get rid of eventually. ; - )And thumbs reck teeth more easily.

One idea to help is put LOTS of binkys in the crib/bed with himm, he is more likly to find one this way! And try not to let the lack of sleep bother you, in a year you will be remembering all the sweet times at night that you shared with your little guy. Good luck!

For quite some time I would have 3-4 binkies in my boys' cribs, just so they could always find one. At 4.5 months he might have a hard time finding it, but give him a few more months (my kids are 2 and 4 now and I still don't sleep through the night very often, as one of them wakes up for one reason or another).

I think it is too early to get rid of the Paci. Eventually he will be able to find it in the crib and put it back in his own mouth. I think he will probably sleep a lot worse without it. Also, a pacifier helps reduce the risk of SIDS.

It's tuff but it will take a couple of hard nights but take it away completely and let him learn to fall asleep without it, but once you've taken it away you can never give it back.
