How to Get Mildew Stains Out of Clothing

Alright moms, I have a few pieces of my kids clothing that have mildew stains on them. They got soiled, rinsed and put in a plastic bag at daycare. The daycare put them in my daughters diaper bag and then they got buried in the bottom of the clothes hamper still in the bag. I have washed them and the mildew smell is gone but they still have the stains on them. How do I get rid of the stains without having to bleach them and possibly ruin them. The clothes are colored and parts of sets that I don't want to have to throw away. We have tried spray and wash which lightened them but now I am at a loss. Do I need to keep spray and washing them or is there something else.

What can I do next?

I used Oxy Clean the one in the blue spray bottle. It cleaned my daughters items that were soiled and I didnt know until I found them in her room. I buy mine at Kroger for under 4 dollars. Just spray it on and it will bubble, make sure you lightly rub it in and spray again. Hope this helps

Easy, easy, easy. I just washed all of my mother-in-law's towels for the same reason. Take a cup of white vinegar and treat like detergent. Wash the load and then dry. There won't be a smell of vinegar but the mildew smell should be gone. If not, do the cycle again. The vinegar dissipates and no residual vinegar smell should remain. Good luck.

I would use Mela Power laundry detergent and add some SolUMel to make it stronger! It'll take the stain out, take the smell out and it's safe. No toxins, chemicals or fumes!

Good luck!!

A 24 hour soaking of Oxyclean worked for me just a few weeks ago. It faded some dark brown shorts just a bit, but I was glad to salvage the adorable outfit.

Unfortunately, the best approach is to throw them out, since you can't use bleach. One thing you could try is to soak them overnite in a solution with vinegar. Vinegar is more "green" and can be used in alot of cases where you use bleach. HOwever, in general, mildew can be allergenic, thus the best thing is to throw away - I've had to do this with a number of things, included the tie-dye socks my son did at camp this summer since he didn't show them to me until he'd be home a month - they went straight into the garbage.
