How Stop Stop Kid Fom Picking and Eating?

I have a 7 yr old who will NOT stop picking his nose and eating his finds. It's disgusting and now his 4 yr old brother is picking up the habit! I have explained to him how it's bad for his health and it's NOT FOOD, but he still does it. Has anyone successfully cured this habit?

What can I do next?

Haha, just yesterday my oldest picked his nose and ate it. I told him it was disgusting and he said, "No, it's not disgusting, it just LOOKS disgusting." Do you know what? He's actually right. It is gross to look at, and can cause nosebleeds, but other than that, it is not really a health hazard--just not socially acceptable.

But, perhaps get him some Boogie Wipes, which are saline-soaked wipes that can help loosen the boogers so he can clean them out without going knuckle-deep :)

While I agree that it's a habit you want to change, I wouldn't worry. I'm pretty sure it's not actually bad for his health. It's just not a polite thing to do.

Most human beings pick their noses (just not in public), so again, not some thing to worry about. What we have told our son that if he feels the need to pick his nose, he needs to use a tissue and do it in private. If he's at home, he can go into the bathroom or his room. If he's in public, he needs to go to the restroom.

You need to pick your battles. So we opted to let our kids know that it's ok to pick your nose, but it's not ok to do it in front of people (and you need a tissue).

As far is eating it goes, not sure what to do about that. Our 6 year old has never had the desire to do this (neither have my husband or I), but our 3 year old does! I'd love to read others' ideas about how to discourage that habit.

Actually this isn't "bad" for him, very gross but not bad. My kids learned in science class that it makes your gut/stomach a stronger/better environment.

Obviously I am not being technically correct because I half listened to this INCREDIBLE news that they thought was so funny.

When I saw one of them doing this, I just told them it was gross and no one likes seeing that and now if I catch them I just say their name and they look and I shake my head, they get it.

Good luck as I know it is stomach turning to see.....lol.

Actually, it's NOT bad for his health, it just looks gross. There are studies out there which show it to be a way humans self innoculate. Consider it to be...cheap vaccine. :-)

Just let him know that it's not appropriate to do in public, around others...and he should wash his hands after.

I posted this same exact question a while back! I was also informed it was 'healthy'. One of his goals in the summer program he's in right now is 'good hygiene'...I asked him if he'd be up for trying something. This is the first time he's ever really been motivated to stop. I had some clove essential oil that I had gotten for something else (DoTerra's clove oil)...and I put a touch (literally, just had him touch the top of the bottle) with his fingers. He does not like the smell...at all...and it doesn't feel all that great going in. I would imagine the once delicious 'finding's' would also not taste so great with any hint of clove oil on them as well...although I've never tried it, and he's never made it that far since we've been using it. I put it on my gums/use it as a mouth wash frequently and DoTerra's is a very high quality...so I'm not concerned about it getting into his system or anything like that. So far...it's been successful! :)

Go online, and look up photos of germs/microbes on a person's hand and show it to him.
I saw it once in National Geographic.

Actually Google Search "photos of germs on a person's hand."

Or take a picture of him doing it and eating it.
A candid shot of him when he does not know.
Then show it to him.
And later, when he is older you can show it to all of his girlfriends.
LOL

i have NO idea. my son was doing it at age 3-4, and i had no idea how to stop it. i reminded him to stop every time i saw him doing it, asked him if he needed a tissue, etc, and he would turn his head and try to sneak it.

then one day (after not really hounding him about it for a week or two) when we were talking a lot around that time about big boy things, what big boys do, how much of a big boy he was getting to be, etc, i happened to see it and just said casually, "gosh you know that there are germs up there and that can make you sick, right? big boys definitely don't do that." can you believe he actually thought about it, and decided to stop? i was really amazed. dumb luck i'm sure. a different day and he wouldn't have taken it that way. but he even said a few days later, "mom i'm glad you told me that picking your nose gives you germs, because i don't want germs. now i don't pick my nose anymore!" and you know what, he doesn't! lol. i couldn't believe how mature he was about it!

It is completely gross. To break the habit you could put hot sauce on his fingers or wrap his fingers with band aides so they will not fit in hs nostrils.

There is a funny photo of a gorilla with his finger up hs nose. Maybe show it to him and remind him, humans do not stick their fingers in their noses and certainly do not eat what they find in there.

It could cause a bleeding nose. He could get the germs from his fingers into his nose.

I don't know about curing but you may want to go with baby steps like starting with don't do it in public.

I tried everything with my son, to even washing his mouth out with mouthwash when I caught him doing it. Unfortunately it took being made fun of from his 4th grade classmates this year for him to stop. I told him that was going to happen. And honestly, I don't think even that would have stopped him had the girl he has a crush on in his class not thought it was anything but disgusting.
