How Old Do Most Kids Start Talking?

I know that it's different for everyone, but my daughter is 15 months old and she isn't saying anything. Every now and then she'll say daddy. I'm a stay at home mom, and I work with her all the time, but nothing is helping. Is this average, or am I over reacting?? If anyone has any advice on helping her with her vocabulary, that would be great!

What can I do next?

With my oldest, she was not talking very much at 2. She started around 2 1/2 and has not stopped since! My friends and family were worried and thinking there was something wrong with her. I had her evaluated by 2 different speech therapists anfd they said that she was completely normal. If you are concerned, I would speak to the pediatrician and see what they recommend. I think I was just not understanding what she was saying when she was younger. I think this because now I have an 18 month old and she is doing the same things. I have learned to listen very carefully to everything she says and I am hearing more and more words every day!

It really does vary alot. One of my boys really didn't talk til he was about 2 1/2. The pediatrician didn't seem concerned & I wasn't cuz I already had 2 that talked all the time. It sounds like your doing everything you can to help her. She may not want to or see the need. Encourage her to ask for things like juice, milk one word responses or questions. I wouldn't worry too much though. Once mine did start there was no difference in him & the ones who talked earlier. There's nothing wrong with voicing your concerns to your dr. that always made me feel better.

My son is 21 months old and still doesn't talk. He says car, ball and uh oh, but that's about it. I was worried at first because every one that I know that has kids his age talked. I talked to his dr. and she said not to worry, kids will talk when they get ready. I can tell him things and he understands so I know there's not something wrong with him he just doesn't want to talk. As long as your daughter understands things that you tell her and can follow simple orders, I wouldn't worry.

Don't fret. My first child didn't talk much until she was about two and then it was like she knew how to talk the whole time. She is ten now and her sister is 15 months old. She has a small vocabulary right now also. All children are different and develop in there own time. The only time you should start to worry is if around 2 and 1/2 they don't know at least fifty words or so. Then you can worry a little. But not much because as I said children develop at their own pace and your child may know the words just isn't ready to share them yet.

About the best you can make sure is to check with your pediatrician and if he is not worried she is probably okay just not found something that has got her excited about talking probably. Ask her doctor if he thinks her hearing is okay that is all I can think of but mostly stop worrying she will soon be talking so much you probably won't be able to get her to stop. I am a mom of 4 and grandma of 2.

It could possibly be her hearing or just her speach. If she has had ear infections with each one a small part of your hearing is affected. Her speech could just be slow developing. My 3 year old step-son still has trouble speaking clearly, and was slow to start.

it is very normal for a child to not say so much at that age. usually around 18 months they start to get articulate. you'll notice that they have about 5 to 20 word vocabulary. at about 20 to 24 months they start putting sentences together and asking why about everthing. some children dont even like to speak at this point but if you are watching his/her expressions change when you point somthing out or explain somthing to him/her this will tell you that at the least they understand or are trying.

J., i wouldn't worry, i tried everything to get my 16 month old to say momma, brother, anything but da da, but thats what he wanted to say. There was no stopping him, now he says gum, bye bye and ball, but very seldom does he say ma ma.All i do is when he's see's somthing, ill tell him what it is and eventually if he wants it he'l say the word. It will come soon enough, just keep pointing and pronouncing words and she'll get it. good luck

I had a friend whose son wasn't talking very well at age 3 but was bright and seemed normal in every other way. She worried and took him to the ear nose and throat Dr. but they couldn't tell her why he wasn't talking. Well, she finally discovered that the muscle that attached his tongue to his mouth was attached too close to the tip of his tongue. Ask your dr.

Don't worry about it! My oldest son never stops talking (was born talking)! My middle child is just now speaking clearly and he just started preschool today. My youngest is 17 months old and he hardly ever talks, but he gave me a lecture today and I couldn't understand a word of it! LOL I figured out that it was about a poopy diaper! When you take your child in for a check up, just mention it and if there is a problem the doc will let you know! Just talk to her about everyday things and speak clearly and before you know it you'll wish she'd just "shut it"!
