We are invited to a wedding of a friend. We spent on airline ticket and the room/car rental 700$ already. I do not work currently. How much is an appropriate gift? the couple wants cash. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I would think $100. If they chose to have a destination wedding where everyone has to travel to get to them then I would think lesser is fine. Also depending on the state they are getting married in-NY and MA are more expensive than other places. I think the general rule of thumb is that you want to cover the cost of your plate. But like you said you've already spent $700- Whatever you can afford is what you should do. Your friend wants you there to share their special day-they shouldn't be looking at the gift.

Have a great time :)

Hi E.,
This echoes the previous responses but I'd like to underscore that you shouldn't give more than you are comfortable giving. Rules of etiquette suggest that the gift should cover the cost of your meal but given the amount you've already invested to share in the friend's special day, $50-100 is more than reasonable.

Hi E.,

Just because the couple would like to have cash doesn't mean you need to heed their wishes. It is tacky at best to request money. If they are trying to cover the cost of your plate, they should have invited fewer people. 700 to travel to the wedding and attend their big day seems like you have spent plenty already. I would suggest sending a gift that you want to send and if it is money, I agree that 50.00 is fine.

Hi,

When I got married we received cash gifts anywhere from $5 to $1000. I think $50.00 is a very respectable amount for a gift especially if you've spent so much on travel & lodging.
