How Much Did Your 9 Year Old Grow Between That Age and 11/12? - Pleasanton,CA

My daughter has a formal for choir which I think might just fit her until she is 11 or 12. It needs to be hemmed and I want to leave enough in the hem to allow for some growth but not so much that the hem looks sloppy. Is this realistic? How much growth should I expect at this point? Thanks Moms! I know every child is different but I have no idea and don't remember.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm going to hem it to allow for the most possible lengthening I can. It's supposed to be 2-3" off the ground and they've asked that the hem not be more than 3". That should possibly get us through next year. It's the smallest size (12) and I may need to take it in a bit on the sides and darts as she swims in it. I'll do as suggested, pass it on if it doesn't work. Hoping it does because this is the one activity she does and it is a good deal for what the kids do and learn. Still all we can afford financially right now. They use the same style dress year after year so there is a possibility to pass it down and get a hand me down.

Thanks Everyone!

hmmm, your plan would never work for my kids! & don't forget about that monthly cycle which will be hitting her.....lots of girls have dramatic body changes thru this timeframe.

& strangely enough, my older son grew over an inch in height & about 30lbs between age 20 & 21! Took us completely by surprise & seriously delayed his hip replacement surgery....

It is not only the hem... that would have to be adjusted.
The overall dress... would need to fit too.

My daughter who recently made 9.... since this past summer, July, grew 1 size up. And her shoes too.
They grow fast. Kids.

From 9 years old until 11 or 12 years old (that is 2-3 years of growth and growing).... your daughter would need another formal. To me. And, she probably would need/want... another style of dress. Unless the choir uses the same style, year after year.
Her shoes for the formal, would increase in size, too.
She will outgrow it. Not only in the hemline.

You're talking about years where most girls are getting height, breast, and hip growing. Her entire body shape is going to be changing (unless she's a late bloomer).

Myself (I remember VERY well, because I had to quit gynastics between 9 & 10, and started modeling/exercise riding just after that).

9 (4th grade) = 5'2 and flat and about 75lbs
12 (6th grade) = 5'9 and C cup and about 100lbs
13 (7th grade) = 6'1 and D cup 123

So for ME in those years... we're talking about a difference of 11 inches and 50lbs. Even HALF that (6" and 25lbs) means a new dress.

Maybe consult with your and hubby's parents. I think girls often hit their growth spurt earlier than boys, and my son really started his big growth closer to age 12. He is 13 1/2 now and still growing in huge strides. But it really kicked into high gear starting around 12. But again, he's a boy.

My daughter was measured for a custom ice skating dress. She grew 1/2 inch sometime between July and October.

You said it,, Each child is different. There is no real way to tell how much a child will grow so, leave as much hem as possible, and if she still loves the dress in 3 years and is too short even with the hem let down, just add a few layers of lace to give it more length. My guess is, this wont fit her anyway once she starts to develop and from waist to shoulder will be too short also. You might be doing someone else a really big favor to hand the dress down to a youger girl who really fits the dress.
