How Many Diaper Covers Do I Need?

ABC has a couple of types of covers, lite-wraps are fine though. I reccomend 4 covers so that you have time to washe them. Pee diapers don't usually need a wrap change the first or second time unless they get really wet, but poop diapers often leak into the cover a little and you'll want to change those. Yay cloth diapers!

We have used cloth diapers that we wash at home since my 14 month old was born. When I was pregnant, I did a lot of reading about diapers. It was my little obsession that I used to contain the anxiety. Anyway, in the end, we tried several different kinds of covers. Thirsties BY FAR are the best. They almost NEVER leak and always contain poo. Anyway, if that is what you are buying, you can probably get away with just 2-3, as it is easy to wipe them off if dirty and they dry super fast. You can order them from Nicki's, as one of the other people suggested. Happy cloth diapering!

I actually think you can get away with a lot fewer covers. I only had 3 of any given size. You don't have to wash them very often unless you have a little poo leak. I liked the pro wraps and the cotton wraps - which is a non plasticy feeling version of the pro wraps. And great job on going with cloth diapers, so much better for your baby and the planet!

I've used Litewrap, Prorap, Bummi's Whisperwrap, and Bumkins covers. Think my fave is Bummi's. Litewrap and Prorap work well too, for less expensive covers. Litewrap sizes seem to run large. Prorap are a bit stiffer feeling but do the job (of course these were hand-me-downs, so maybe adds to stiffness). Bumkins has a really nice fit, are lightweight and not bulky, however I don't like how the velcro tabs are designed. They often end up poking my baby's tummy. And the edges of the tabs are a bit hard since there's an extra flap to "tag" back the tabs when washing.

You probably need around 4 newborn ones, then maybe 6 of next size up. This is a generous amount that helps cover (no pun intended) a couple poop explosions or leakages.

You have gotten a lot of good advice about the styles - it really just depends on your preferences. I personally did not like the ones with the velcro and snaps or just snaps, but preferred the strictly velcro and no extra tabs. As far as quantity, I would agree that you can get by with fewer (maybe 6) for the newborn size, but I always had 9-12 of the larger sizes. You don't have to change the cover with every diaper, but you will want to change it if you have a super wet diaper or if there's a poop (because you're almost guaranteed to get some poop on the cover with every bowel movement). we also left a few with our daycare person, so she always had some and we had our stash at home.

I used cloth with both my kids and loved it! I used Tiny Tots at first, but then bought and washed my own. It is a whole lot cheaper, very simple, and safe.

I always had 6 covers on hand incase of blowouts. You don't have to wash them after every use, but I would use a new one every day. You can find them on the internet, just search for cloth diapers and you'll get lots of choices and advice on doing your own. I got covers at a thrift store and baby second hand shops. They grow fast, so you'll need to change sizes once in a while. My advice, though we want to do new for our babies, is to go cheap.

It's hard to remember now, but it's a lot less; i think we only had maybe 5-6 covers for the 25 or so cloth diapers we used. They were expensive so we got by with the minimum. I also found some when i went to the local thrift store that sufficed to supplement the new ones i bought. best to you.

Jardine Diapers has a wonderful website and is reasonably priced and its run by a mom. I like the bumkins covers and used them with two of my boys and they will still work for the third. Hope that helps.

I use Tiny Tots diapers. On their website they offer various diaper covers. I like the whisper wrap and the pro-wrap. I am assuming you are asking for a newborn??

I would suggest getting 2 diaper covers each of 2 kinds of covers (4 total) to start. The newborn size. Then buy 2 more of the kind you like best in the next size up (10-15 pounds). Then your baby can grow into them. If you do laundry every day or every other day, this will be enough covers to start (4). I usually change covers every day in the evening and after a really big blowout. Not after just pee. Newborns have a lot of MESSY diapers, and especially if you are breastfeeding. It is like a flash flood in the diaper, and the diaper can't contain it all!! Good to have a dependable cover and sometimes you have to wash it as well as the clothes. . . well, you will see.

We use ABC too. Our daughter is 11.5 weeks. We started with one of their Super Whisper Wraps, a couple of Thirsties someone loaned us and two g-diaper covers (we don't use the g-diaper inserts, just the covers). When we brought her home, we tested them all out for a week and decided to order the Thirsties. I really like the Thirsties, but the ones we ordered are a really different size and shape from the ones we were given. There may be a quality control issue with that company. But they were still good covers. Now that she's bigger, the Super Whisper Wraps fit her well. We're just getting ready to order the next size up and I'm tempted to order them this time. ... Anyway, my recommendation is to order a few different types and test them out. I admire the moms who only needed 3-4 covers. We needed 8-9, doing laundry every other day. We reuse the ones with pee until they get poopy (if wet we set them aside to dry and slip them back in rotation when the next cover gets poopy). We don't use the Snappis, we fold the pre-fold into thirds and tuck it into the diaper cover with one end folded over a little (in the back for girls and front for boys!).

We love cloth diapers! For newborn, I would definitely suggest the ProRap. The have the "U" shape cutout to avoid the belly button. I had 5-6 of the newborn size. You can expect the messy the cover a lot more often with a newborn than an older baby. We are now in a size medium and 3 covers would be sufficient. I am still using the ProRap. I have also tried the Bummies and Bumkin covers. ProRap is my favorite fit around the legs and waist. And they just happen to be the least expensive!
And a little 3 pack of the "Snappi" clip is a must! Have fun! Like others have said, Tiny Tots has a great boutique with very helpful staff.

When I had cloth dipes, I found 4 covers to be enough. You don't have to change the cover with every wet diaper. I also kept some Gerber plastic pants on hand- but they weren't as convenient. I liked Bummis Whisper wraps and then I had some Litewraps (but I don't remember the brand- just the word litewrap on the tag!). With my second child, I didn't use cloth as much and the wraps didn't fit her as well- so try a couple of brands before you stock up too much!

I'd say 4 of the newborn size and 5-6 of the next size up. Check out the websites for info on fit because some babies are bigger in the legs and some wraps will work better then others. I like the Bumpkin's and I fold the extra flap on the velcro over so it doesn't poke, the Bummies (sp?) work well too. At night I use the fuzzi buns or a diaper wrap where the diaper is inserted under a fleece or wool layer. It keeps them feeling dryer so they don't wake as much. If you are having a problem with leaking at night you can buy inserts (they look like maxi pads) safeway has a brand called diaper doublers that I use. I put it inside the folded up diaper before I put the diaper in the wrap. I use ABC diapers and have for all three of my kids and have been very happy with them.

I used a diaper service for the first 12 weeks of my sons life and used the air flow covers from mother ease diapers- they are great covers, wash out easily, and have several snaps to grow with your little one. I change the cover once or twice a day (unless it gets poopy) so I'd double however many days worth you need). I suppose you could change more frequently - ds's wraps do get wet, but they keep the wet between it and the outside of his diaper, not his skin!

My sister cloth diapered her 4 kids and liked motherease wraps best. They have snaps which is apparently good when the kids are old enough to try and remove their diapers!

I find that 6 - 8 covers work well for us. I wash them with baby clothes about twice a week. The medium size seems to be what she'll use longest so I have 8 of them. I had 6 of the small size and only 4 newborn size that she quickly outgrew and I washed them more often. I use several brands, my favorite are the Bummis. Bummis small size fits 8 - 15lbs but my almost 18lb daughter still wears the smalls comfortably while also fitting into her new mediums. Hi K., ABC actually has 2 kinds: Litewrap and Diaperap. We got both for our son when he was little, but now ONLY use the litewrap, they are MUCH more leak proof. We really like them. We have a lot of them because we don't want to have to do the wash as often, about 12 or so. The more covers you order, the more of a discount you get through ABC.

for a new born I would say around four. They are going to outgrow them quickly so do not get too many of that size. I love Bummis super wisper wraps and super brights. Or you could go with fleece or wool. It all depends on the style you want.

I use something similar to their litewrap (mine's prowrap classic.) I wash my own about twice a week and use 10 covers (6 when she was a newborn). However I use a pocket diaper at night b/c it keeps her skin dry longer so she doesn't wake up so much. Hope all this helps

It's been awhile for me (youngest is about to be 7), but I tried to keep at least 6 to 8 diaper covers around. The reality is that you'll be doing an unimaginable amount of laundry anyway so that number was usually enough to last the 1 - 2 days before I had to run another load of laundry! Also, the diaper covers are made to dry quickly, so if there wasn't a load of laundry going, you just rinse them off in the tub or sink (or toilet if necessary) and then hang them up over the shower curtain rod and they're dry in a couple of hours.

As for the diaper covers, I liked the ProRaps, though since I got the white ones, they would eventually end up with urine stains (I wasn't into using bleach on any of the kids clothes). The Bummis are OK, but they didn't fit my son well around the legs.

hi~ i am using ABC diapers as well. i just order 3 covers from them as they recommended and it seems to work out. i found that when my son was still really little and pooping a lot, i had to wash out the soiled diaper cover right away so i didn't run out of covers. i recently did some research for organic clothing and found some cool diaper covers on-line. i wish i'd ordered some that were PVC free or something other than what ABC diaper offered.

My Daughter is 20 mos. and has been in cloth diapers since birth. However, I use disposeables at night and while traveling. I use Tiny Tots service and love, love, them. They are really laid back and really easy about temporary holds for vacations, etc. I currently use 4 of the the LITE WRAPS.I felt the fit her best. The Pro wraps didn't fit as well, too slim or something. Anyway, I also use fuzzi bunz (3) for longer period wearing. You have to wash these after each use - maybe two uses?. They are really easy to wash the poo just doesn't really stick to them. You can also buy flushable liners to place on top of the fuzzi bunz - which mostly keeps the poo from sticking to the diaper. I now there are TONS of websites for cloth diapers... mother-ease.com, so many. Although, a lot of those websites cater to moms who wash their own diapers. I know a lot of the moms love the fuzzi bunz. You won't beleive how dry you child stays. Which is nice for errands, etc. They swear by them at night. However, my daughter leaks through everytime - so I just use disposeable.

You may want to go tiny tots for some advise as well.

We use Tiny Tots Pro Wraps. You can buy any covers from any site to use. We just had our third child (Ava is almost 3.5, Peyton 22 months & Rylan three weeks on Friday)...two girls, one boy and really like them. I would say we have about 5 of the second size, but maybe three of the new born size (they grow out of these quickly). As they begin to eat food you will want more wraps...they can often easily get poop on them. We ordered them as we went along with Ava. We use Tiny Tots. You definitely need the Snappi clip which works great for the cloth diapers. I would have about 5 covers to get started with. We started with Pro Wrap. Depending on the size of your baby, you won't use the newborn covers that long. For bigger babies I like the bummies and fuzzie bumkins (I have one that I use as diaper cover). If you live near Campbell, it may be worth a trip to Tiny Tots to see their selection. The staff are very knowledgeable. You can buy new diaper covers on eBay either from individuals or from ebay stores.

You need about six-eight diaper covers for a newborn, do an internet search and see if you can find a company that will send you a package of a few different covers so you can find one you like. They are not all the same. Try the diaperpin website for reviews
